Howard, our best and most reliable receiver, is gone because he's stupid. North gets hurt getting out of bed in the morning--and I'm not convinced that he has the speed, when healthy (which is never) to be a good receiver anyway. Malone was lost last year and, while improved this year, remains a long way from polished. Pearson is OK. Smith is pretty good. And there you go.

What Jones really needs is a proven big-program offensive coordinator--someone with some chops--a Cutcliffe type or someone with NFL experience. The central Michigan crew isn't cutting it.

And Jancek hasn't exactly been tearing it up himself.

He has the chance to hire staff like that. Dirk Koetter is one example of a proven coach with NFL and college HC exp. Not sure he will go outside if his circle unless he is forced, which may happen. Perhaps he is too insecure to hire someone who could steal hia thunder. I dont know.

I wish Butch would go on the mike & scream at Georgia players the entire game, " Chubb your not lined up right, snap the ball, snap the ball, grab his facemask before he gets away " !!! Good entertainment !!! Vols rip defeat from the jaws of victoty!!! Go Vols !!!

The WR issue has bothered me, and I've kept quiet about it.

The winning formula for NCs is: solid game-manager QB (dual-threat is bonus), dominant DL, one lock-down corner, 2x stud RBs, and ONE go-to YAC receiver on the outside with a reliable slot receiver.

Think Joey Kent + Craig Faulkner. Amari Cooper. That guy recently from Vanderbilt. Hines Ward. Penn State had a guy who beat us in the Citrus Bowl one year. And I think the ONE go to receiver is a staple in most NC winning teams.

We have about 5-guys who could be that guy on our team. It was supposed to be North if he can get over the injury bug. It looks like Preston Williams could be the guy to fill the breach - although Malone, Croom (uninjured), hell, even JJ could do it this year. Pearson and Smith could easily be the slot guy. Throw in a solid / exceptional TE and the passing game should be a monster.

The point is, we have more than enough options for the winning formula. However, I think this: like QB by committee, when you have dominant WR by committee you don't have a dominant WR.

Let's get our best three guys out there and give them 70 - 80% of the snaps.

I think Dobbs has been over-coached; his inconsistency this year, IMHO, is down to that AND the fact that he has 10 guys he has to get a rhythm with.

Solid theory.

I just think the whole team plays exceptionally tight and there is little continuity which to me is most glaring at the WR spot.

These are NOT my thoughts.
A friend of mine is a psychologist and a big Vol fan.
He says that Butch is a casebook narcissist who has a Napoleonic complex and major anger management issues.
I asked if that would prevent him from being a good coach.
The answer was.....it's a matter of degree and how well managed these traits are.

Has your idiot psychologist friend realized that he's described SABAN right down to the core....and that guy has had some considerable success!

Just having fun as some pencil-necked, never-wearing-a-jockstrap psychologist analyzing an SEC FB coach....

priceless! :salute:

Butch is a hell of a WR coach... He was a great OC. He wouldn't be where he is today if not. His position coaches need to do better. The bottom line is the Offensive Line is TERRIBLE!!! The right side is F'd. Kendrick holds for dear life on every play... When D Line stunts they get so confused. They're just not SEC guys. Until we get an SEC OL, we'll never go anywhere. Butch could coach like Robert Neyland and never get anywhere with this OL.

Our offensive line has a coaching problem, im not saying that not taking a lineman that year was a good thing but coaching has something to do with this as well. There are very few offensive lines in the country that couldnt do better than ours, i would bet mtsu's line could block an sec defensive line as good if not better than ours and noone on that team probably had an sec offer.
