Fingers, what was going on in practice this week?

Sounds to me like Butch has decided to get busy with his players and directly coach them himself.

Actually, I think the opposite. The purpose of the microphone is for him to control everything and be heard over everyone. He is the "be all, end all" and God's gift to coaching. I think maybe an assistant or someone sat him down and explained that he needed to swallow the mic and let everyone else have some occasional input.

These are NOT my thoughts.
A friend of mine is a psychologist and a big Vol fan.
He says that Butch is a casebook narcissist who has a Napoleonic complex and major anger management issues.
I asked if that would prevent him from being a good coach.
The answer was.....it's a matter of degree and how well managed these traits are.

So Saban and Belichik...minus the actual success?

He's got some issues, that's for sure.

Not quite the same. Saban and Belichick definitely have controlling characteristics, but they are also expert delegators, teachers, and strong with follow-up and accountability. Butch hasn't shown anything other than the control part.

Have you ever, ever seen a Belichick or a Meyer or a Saban running around at practice shouting through a loudspeaker for hours on end? THAT, is freaking weird.

There you go, nucci. You seem to have nailed it in your post just prior to this one. Let's hope no microphone this week is a sign of him managing his narcisstic traits. It surely needs to be.

Is that good or bad? I'm not sure, although it's not humanly possible to be a worse WR coach than Zach Azzani, so maybe that's a plus.

Butch is a hell of a WR coach... He was a great OC. He wouldn't be where he is today if not. His position coaches need to do better. The bottom line is the Offensive Line is TERRIBLE!!! The right side is F'd. Kendrick holds for dear life on every play... When D Line stunts they get so confused. They're just not SEC guys. Until we get an SEC OL, we'll never go anywhere. Butch could coach like Robert Neyland and never get anywhere with this OL.

Butch probably isn't the second coming of General Neyland, but he sure is sounding like the second coming of General Patton. :ermm:

Well then he ain't much of a headcoach if he's just now focusing on the WRs after letting Z absolutely run that very talented group into the ground for 3 years running and essentially rendering them obsolete.

As "passing game coordinator" he should be on the hot seat. It's criminal seeing this talent wasted.

Howard, our best and most reliable receiver, is gone because he's stupid. North gets hurt getting out of bed in the morning--and I'm not convinced that he has the speed, when healthy (which is never) to be a good receiver anyway. Malone was lost last year and, while improved this year, remains a long way from polished. Pearson is OK. Smith is pretty good. And there you go.

What Jones really needs is a proven big-program offensive coordinator--someone with some chops--a Cutcliffe type or someone with NFL experience. The central Michigan crew isn't cutting it.

And Jancek hasn't exactly been tearing it up himself.

It IS hard to be good offensively if your OL is not good. Last year it was terrible, this year it is improved but still probably not better than mediocre.

It's amazing that we even have this discussion. It has always struck me as odd that he wants to he mic'ed up, like he's some singer at a concert or something. I've always took the approach of "hmm, that's sorta odd, but hey, if it works it works."

Well, it hasn't worked. It's led to a 14-16 record. He needs to ditch the microphone shtick and delegate more to the coaches.

He said in an interview that he kept losing his voice from yelling during practice so that's why he carries a microphone around

That's EXACTLY what a clever, narcissistic, egomaniac with a profound napoleonic complex would say.
Can't believe you fell for his lies, Rev.

Did Butch abandon the microphone for just one practice, or has he been unplugged all week? If he is no longer using it, I see that as very significant in terms of what went on behind closed doors in the aftermath of the Crowder rumors coming to light.

I hope he has abandon the microphone,it is annoying as hell to listen to him on a video, much less being the player trying to learn what to do

again it is injures that is hurting the WR's

to me it is injuries,a lack of quality depth and no good line backer play that is hurting Jancek this year

"Next year" once again. This OL won't progress at all as long as Mahoney is in charge.

Hes not in charge(siap). Thats the thing that bothers me even more. Hired an OC to shore uo the Oline and not only did that not work (as of now at least) the entore passing game regressed .
