Finebaum Tweet on Cuonzo

I got your point which had nothing to do with my post.

My point is you can not bring up Pearl's six NCAAs then turn around and say Martin did nothing because you expected it. Pearl had a bunch of finishes in the tourney and regular seasons that were below expectations of everyone including the polls. Now a year not ranked and the Sweet 16 means nothing. Pearl was ranked every year except the first preseason. So to those complaining about this year most of his years should have been crap. Even the first year. If you get a 2 seed that means you should make the Elite Eight by their reasoning. He barely beat a 15 seed on a Lofton bailout with 3 seconds. He then lost in the second round. So either this year was great or brag on one of Pearl's years because the rest were crap.

He barely beat a 15 seed coached by none other than Gregg Marshall.

And my objective is not to tout Pearl because I agree he underachieved in more season than one. Very few are discounting this season and the success we had. I'd say everyone is elated with what happened, some of us just aren't surprised that it happened. It's not about what happened this year, it's about what didn't happen the other two that have people down/worried/questioning.

I thought we mostly overachieved with Pearl--and so I give him most of the credit. Did he ever have the talent we had this year? I don't think so. We had three bona fide NCAA good players this year--though it took Richardson a while to show how good he was. The nice thing about this job is that the SEC isn't very strong--so if you get /some/ talent you can compile enough wins to get in the tourney. We want to do better than just get in, but that's the starting point.

I wasn't happy with this season until the last few weeks either, but I think you're really stretching the talent level this year when you say Pearl never had a team this talented.

So tired of hearing about Pearl. The man lied and lost his job all on his own. Just like Kiffin couldn't stay away from the young girls

So you can't deny Martin gave us that chance this year then

No I can't. It was a hell of a turnaround. I just wish it didn't have to be a turnaround and we had played like that all year. I'll take 24-12 and SW16 every year over Pearl's 22-8 with wins over Texas and UF and 2nd round exit.

Because when a poster tries to compare Marshall's first 3 yrs to Cuonzo's, it bares mentioning the immediate prior history and what they walked into.

Cuonzo walked into a team that had lost every player who received significant playing time from the Elite 8 appearance 2 years prior...and also lost Hopson and Tobias Harris prematurely to the NBA Draft (from a team that lost by 30 to Michigan to end the season under Pearl).

No doubt.

Hope if we have to make a move we hire a coach as good as Zo, I fear we take a step back.

It was also a roster with 4 returning top 100 recruits and in 2 incoming 150 recruits, in Richardson and Stokes (obviously halfway through). The roster was not as void of talent as many like to profess. It was full of inexperience and rawness.

I don't get the big flack over the petition at the time when it was started and up until about a week and half before the end of the regular season.

I don't think anyone (where they admit it now or not) would have seriously not questioned Martin's job at the time. I mean we just made the play-in game (or what ever you want to call it) so until we went on that run to close out the season we were not in the Tournament.

I love how we finished the regular season and the NCAA Tournament. Now was that all on Coach Martin or was it this team finally decided to play (who knows)? I liked the Cuonzo Martin I saw in the tourney but was it enough to give him a raise or extension? I'm not sure, where was that CCM the last two and half+ years?

If Martin stays will he be that coach we saw against Mercer/Michigan up, yelling, fist pumping or the guy letting the zebras have there way with his team like we have seen the last two plus years?

I think that has to be questioned!

One would think Finebaum would be too busy engaged in rhythmic slapping outside the Alabama football shower stalls to be worried about Tennessee basketball.

Too bad Majors didn't push his orbital bone into his brain when he had the chance years ago.

Finebaum was pissed the Battle did not fire their coach and hire BP, he thought it was a done deal

I would like to see Cuonzo stay personally. Things were starting to come together for him and he ran a clean program. If he does leave however and we get Marshall I would be thrilled as well though. I just pray that Cuonzo doesn't bail and then we hire some chump.

I think they would need to give the farm to Marshall though. The guy is a god among men in Wichita. This isn't like the old days of bcs college football where a bigger school means national stage. All you gotta do is make the tourney and you can win it and look where that got Brad Stephens, an nba job.

You mean top recruits like Swiperboy? Disappointing sophomores Golden and Mcrae? And High School senior Stokes?... Yeah...they were loaded. How everyone rationalizes tearing CCM down is laughable.
