Let's be honest, if it wasn't for Phyllis from Mulga, no one outside of Alabama would have ever heard of Paul Finebaum.

We were in dee[ trouble before NICO left. No leadership, holding onto the ball, inability to read defenses. Turmoil in the background. Another year of him would have seen him walk who knows maybe even in mid season. I think we are in less deep trouble than we were in had he stayed.

Paul could very well be right. Aguilar is a pick waiting to happen. He throws a lot of balls in the area of the other players.

If we have a really successful year, I have serious doubts that it will be because of Joey.

Fortunately we have recruited well. Both young guys were much higher rated out of HS than the transfer and I feel our chances for success lie more with them than with the transfer. Mac was everyone’s 5 star before he shut down his recruitment and while services don’t want to admit it, once a guy stops showing up for their events, they begin to drop their rating. That’s just a fact.

My unpopular opinion….. the system doesn’t require a good QB.

Hit the screen
Get 3 or 4 first downs with your legs
Throw a catchable deep ball and get 4 PI’s a game

Joe and Nico were both BETTER qbs than Hendon….. the deep ball, the pi’s and the big conversions with his legs were the difference.

Why I believe we allocate roster funds and recruiting capital to positions other than QB.

If your team is loaded at other positions, if you have a serviceable QB, you can win. However, recently, UGA wr’s have not been that dynamic, so I can somewhat understand the point. As for our Vols, I would be more concerned about the development of our OL and receiver corps vs QB.

I don't understand why we are in this situation. We have TWO very highly ranked QB prospects on campus right now, yet our supposed "QB Guru" cant get either one ready to play by Sept???? So... either CJH whiffed recruiting a QB worth a **** since he's been here, or he isn't the QB whisperer the media and many fans claim him to be. Choices, choices...

Look up how much playing time Merklinger had last year. He played in 2 games, 6of 9 for 48 yards, no interceptions or touchdowns. That is the reason Heupel wants a veteran QB in the room. Mac hasn't played a down of college football yet, other than the Orange and White game. I hope Merklinger lights the scoreboard, but watching the replay of the O&W game, it didn't look too promising.

He is also basing his opinion on the fact he believes Nico was going to have that breakout season this yr. Apparently Hyp did not agree with that or he would not have told him to hit the road. Paul's opinion is no better than anyone's on here. In fact I would bet several that post on here have a lot more inside knowledge to the FB program than Paul. His main contact is Adams at Knox news. Enough said there.

Generally speaking, the 2010 and 2013 Iron Bowls made Paul Finebaum. He was a local Birmingham radio guy before Harvey Updyke poisoned the trees and confessed to it on his show.

He'd already made it nationally before Phyllis became famous.

I'm not panicking. Do we have a wildcard at QB? absolutely. How different is that from most teams around the country? It isn't. The media is into selling hype and fear. It's the offseason. They need clicks and views. I have no doubt that one of our 3 QB's will step up. I think that we need to brace for a drop off in the team in general this year. I think we would struggle even if Nico were here. Merk is stepping in at the same level as Nico when he started last year. Despite all the hype around Nico, I don't think he was or ever will live up to it. I think Merk can at least match what Nico did. If Joey steps in and is even better, then we may have a tiger by the tail.

I am trying to be optimistic but I agree Aguilar threw a bunch of interceptions against Sun Belt defenses. What is he going to do when he faces some of the best defenses in the nation?? I hope he becomes a Heisman candidate but only time will tell.

Honest question here, how good of a QB situation did we have last year?

I honestly don't know the answer, but I had questions that I was willing to wait until after this next season to try and answer that question.

Was the offense limited last year due to the offensive line, receivers or QB?

Was it possibly a combination of the above?

The offensive line seemed to be a little pourus at times on pass blocking, the receivers did appear to not be able to breakaway from the defensive backs and dropped some passes that were in the numbers or face mask all too often.

Was Leave-a-molloy-ova not able to comprehend the playbook?

I honestly don't know, but those would be my 3 biggest suspects.

Neither Joe nor Nico was a better QB than Hooker. Anthony Edwards can throw a ball like 70 yards. Just having a strong arm doesn’t make you a better QB.
