Just when I thought that there was no possible way for the collective I.Q. of this board to get any lower, it has now dipped somewhere between a Neanderthal and a Mongolid.

Why don't you go "hero worship" the dead drunk guy on your own board.

...and congrats on improving your record to a whopping 4-11

Bear Bryant has a better record (12-2) against Florida than Fulmer against Florida 5-11 :lolabove:

What is your point?

I wasn't understanding the original argument comparing Fulmer to Bryant either. However, Florida has no dog in this hunt. The discussion seems to be between Tennessee and Alabama. Especially since Florida didn't field any good teams (without cheating) prior to 1990.

Just a piece of trivia...not an argument

this type of troll is why the ban button was invented

.........you come along and make it happen.

and i still can't believe this thread has lasted as long as it has.

With all due respect I thought this thread was about all-time SEC coaches not limited to just Alabama and Tenn.
You are correct UF was a non-factor for most of the 20th century and most teams had a winning record against UF. I just threw out that fact to state some coaches are better against some teams and worst against others.
We got a great history of coaches in the SEC. We are the envy of other conferences where many conferences will have trouble naming 5-10 decent coaches in their history.

The overall thread is about all-time coaches, but you jumped into a discussion related to Alabama and Tennessee and threw a Florida reference in there. Just did not fit when I read it.

In 21 seasons,
Neyland won
8 conference championships (38.1%)
3 national championships (14.3%)

In 38 seasons,
Bryant won
15 conference championships (39.5%)
6 national championships (15.8%)

If you want all known, including minor polls, national championships, Neyland had 5 and Bryant had 10.
Neyland had 1 national championship.

"Dead drunk guy?" Was he talking about Neyland or Bryant? He needs to specify because it fits both.

I'm not saying it as criticism. I think a man who serves his country in battle(Neyland) or pulls himself up out of abject poverty by sheer will and force of talent(Bryant) can drink as much as they damn well please.

On a side note, Hershel's first choice was clemson. His parents persuaded him to stay in state at Georgia.

We all know Bear didnt need marque players to win NC's as he did in the 1970's. Bear won consistently, and stayed a power. In no way i would diminish Dooleys accomplishment but had he had better seasons out side the Hershel era, then he would be in the discussion as the top 3 or 5. He has had a Fulmeresque career.

I can't disagree with anything you said. He had a great run with Hershel in the backfield; the rest of his career was not as good. He was much more inconsistent than the Bear, General Neyland, etc. On that we certainly agree.

But he was still a pretty darn good coach, and not as over-rated as some think him to be.

For the sake of argument, let's assume Hershel had gone to Clemson and that Dooley had won only 50% of the games in the Hershel era. He still would have won 180 games, which is third highest in the SEC behind Bear and John Vaught. He also won three SEC titles without Hershel. I'd say he accomplished a great deal even if you take Hershel out of the picture. Not many coaches win 180 games and three SEC titles.

Call him a good coach, a very good coach, a fair coach, a lucky coach, an overrated coach, whatever. 201 wins, 6 SEC titles, and a national championship speaks for itself. It is what it is.

I'm kidding. Both were giants of the game and were over 18 for the VAST majority of their respective coaching careers.

Oh I know all this. What Neyland did was great. I have the utmost respect for him and what he did.

Neyland was a great coach. He did amazing things here. He should be ranked in any smart person's top 5 coaches of all time. But Bryant is #1 as far as I'm concerned.

This is from the same guy who, a couple of weeks ago, said that Bryant was nothing but a drunk...

What's a mongolid? Must be a Bammer term.

Only 1? I thought it was more like 3... College football data warehouse doesn't usually seem to include fake titles...
Only if you want to claim the 1938 and 40 "championships" which were "awarded" by the Dunkel System, whatever that is. I've said it many times before, but it never ceases to amaze me how UT fans will blast bammers for claiming 12 national championships (or whatever they are up to now), yet these same people want to claim bogus championships for UT. We have 2 legitimate national championships, 1951 and 1998.
