Film study on New coach

I’m salty about this hire at all, I’m also not over the moon about it either I’m at it may work, it could work kind of mode. However, I think there will be serious growing pains the 1st half of season as these kids now once again have to learn a brand new offensive scheme and defensive scheme all over again, but I’m very very optimistic that game 4 or 5 we will see it start coming together.

I can almost guarantee we’ll look more like a respectable football team the first game next season than we did at any time under Jeremy Pruitt

The most common thought after Pruitt hire:

“I have no doubts that this defense will be outstanding, the defense will keep us in games. We’ve just got to get a decent OC and we’ll compete for championships.”

A common thought starting to emerge after Heupel hire:

“I have no doubts that this offense will be outstanding, the offense will keep us in games. We’ve just got to get a decent DC and we’ll compete for championships.”

I think it’s more about getting good players at this point. Regardless of schemes on either side of the ball, if the talent isn’t there, you won’t compete.

Really good review. Don't think we'll have many offensive clusters like Beldar. Josh the Hype-ELL will boost the offense like we've never seen. Defense, another story. We just need to score more points. I suspect tons of high scoring games which should be fun to watch. I don't know if Hype-ELL will ultimately be successful but he's going to have a much bigger impact then the Beldar idiot. This is the kind of hire Fulmer should have made.

I have no worries about JH scheming the offense up well. A great DC hire and filling the staff out with capable recruiters will be vital to his success here
I agree. Let's just say we maybe catch a stroke of luck and get a Lane Kiffin offense mind w/o the potential baggage. On one hand, I'd like to keep our VFL's...Tee and Jay, but you also never know behind the scenes on if they want to be here or if they were working the McD's drive thru value meals. Steele, however, a VFL and accomplished D coach and recruiter should be retained IF he wants to be here. Let's just say we never brought Steel in for his bridge gap venture...I'd say, w/o that, he'd be at the top of the list to hire. I'm fairly on board w/ JH, but I'm getting nervous about the feeling that we're seeing another CBJ staff bringing too many cronies from UCF w/ him. Do what you want on O, but mid-major DC may not cut it. In SEC, you need someone who's been there, done that...even if you have to pay in the $1.5MM range.

Yeah it’s a Jimmys and Joes league no matter what offensive or defensive schemes you run. Tennessee needs to recruit and develop their two deep for three to four years at minimum before anyone uses the word championship around here. If someone believes otherwise than they need to take the Orange sunglasses off. I would love to see our team fight for 60 minutes, play fundamental football, and just get better each time they go out. More points is always nice but it’s way more than that. We haven’t had a staff here since 2009 that developed both sides of the ball in the same year. Dooley, Butch, Pruitt failed miserably at player development. Tennessee will always recruit well and bring enough talent in to compete if we surround them with the right coaches and older players to mentor and develop them. Hopefully this new TBD staff can start the process the right way. We have alot of catching up to do and it’s just a fact of the current state of the program.

This is a good film study on our new coach, and gives an optimistic analysis of his prospects at TN. Worth watching.

For sure. Our quarterbacks have been grossly underdeveloped in recent years which is one of the many reasons that Pruitt had to go.

I'm not sure if Bailey is a great fit for this offense, but Hooker and Salter should thrive in it. I like Maurer's physical abilities, but I think he's still got some growing up to do. If he matures and gets to work, I could certainly see a scenario where he's pushing for the starting job.
I'm kinda curious about that also. Tweak the playbook to fit the QB's or tweak the QB's to fit the playbook. This is where a true innovator comes into play. Obviously the tweaking should go both ways. Bailey is pure pocket-type passer. We actually have 4 if you want to move Holiday back from receiver to QB who have legitimate wheels for running an option. CJH is gonna have his hands full determining the best QB fit for his offense. Hopefully he settles on one guy and don't have to experiment in season because of uncertainty. Continually changing QB's every game throws an offenses rythym off , imo. I want a decisive HC.

This is for any of you that nerd out on offensive schemes and wrinkles like I do. Matt Wyatt does a little film study of Heupel at UCF and during his time at Mizzou. He is a Miss St, hail state, whatever guy. But a former QB and usually pretty solid on his film breakdown.

What is this craziness that you just made me watch? Are you trying to tell me that there are offenses out there, that actually scheme to make defenses adjust to what they’re doing? I don’t know man, I mean, the up the gut on first and second down, throw on third down, punt on fourth, has kinda been the way we do things around these parts, for a long time. I just don’t know if I can get on board with this fancy, up tempo, schematic advantage, offense that you’re trying to convince us really exists.
GBO!!

I’m kind of a cautious guy. I think the hire will clearly improve our offense. I guess what I liked from the PC was the answer to question if our team CAN be effective next season under his offense. He said if we can have a full spring practice (which we should) and a summer and fall camp then he felt confident our team would be ready. I just hope we don’t get our expectations too high and get crazy because we don’t perform the way the numbers say we should. After all, last time I checked, we still play in the SEC.

Ya know, honestly, If this upcoming season we end up 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 hell, I’ll even say 5-7...... but if we are scoring 30+ points a game and top 5 in SEC in total offense, I will be ECSTATIC!!!

Drew Lock made that offense great. It improved every year he was there up to his last season under Dooley. Then he left and it sucked again. UCF’s offense declined in each of Heupel’s first two seasons, then had a bit of an uptick this year, however it aligned with a huge drop in defensive efficiency so overall they were worse.

At utah state, their offensive efficiency was basically unchanged prior to, during, and after his time there.

The offenses at Oklahoma were up and down while he was there and he ended up being fired.

The Oklahoma situation was a little more complicated than that. They scored 6 points but gave up 48 to Clemson if my memory is correct. A Stoops was the DC on that team, so what would Big Game Bob do to show he was making changes? I’m not a CJH fan or apologist, however I am looking forward to a very fun offense to watch that scores touchdowns.

Agreed. It would be refreshing for the team to be fun to watch again.

Those last two plays against Cincinnati get me excited. Great coaching and great execution. 1 player being the sacrificial lamb so his teammate can score. Excited to see what CJH can do with the players we have on offense. Might be the highest rated prospects Heupel has had a chance to work with at the skill positions. Look forward to seeing what he can do with them. Got to find a good DC and give him complete control. Heupel can be successful here.
Heupel Will be a successful hire****
Sometimes I dont notice my typos either.
