to pull top talent out of texas--that is a pipe dream. We'd be much better off going after somebody with florida/SE connections. IMO the Vols need to hire a strong offensive mind with some experience who works hard and will like to recruit. You want to hire somebody who's BEST coaching days are ahead--not behind; that's why no Butch Davis or any real veteran. You want to hire a comer, IMO, unless somebody established--not too old--emerges surprisingly.
I think it's considerably easier to find a good defensive coordinator than a really sharp offensive coordinator. UT's problems have been more offensive than defensive in recent years, though both have suffered from a talent falloff. But I would hire a guy who knows offense and can hire a good DC.
Note: Peyton Manning be an ideal succesor (if Fulmer could manage to hang on through his current contract.
I realize that it is probably beyond your recollection but Neyland played at West Point. You know. The guy the stadum is named after. For as long as I can recall, UT has established a tradition of hiring head coaches who played here, and who understand what it means to be a "Vol."
For as long as I can recall, UT has established a tradition of hiring head coaches who played here, and who understand what it means to be a "Vol." Fulmer's done a great job recruiting, disciplining, and winning critical games over the years, and his schemes, (while often branded as "too conervative" has won more ballgames [% wise] than any active coach.)
Why not allow him at least the opportunity to gather Clawsen, Crompton, and Stevens tgether to find an effective passing attack?

If that doesn't work, and you'll still want a young, energetic Al Davis throw-away....I prefer "Chuckie" Gruden over Lane. JMO
1) It was the end of the half(well, :05 seconds left)
2) It only came up around 9 yards short
3) He never expected to make it, just to kill the clock, and that's what he did.
Fulmer and his coaches have a $10 mil buyout---that's some serious money. UT may wait a year or two till it goes down.
