FBI locks down Pilot HQ?

....

The Haslams do A LOT for Knoxville and for UT, and this crap will only hurt UT. Some of it is legit, but I believe most of it is just hype.

Approaching $100M in settlements so far with little resistance and admitting fault doesn't suggest hype to me.

It is astonishing that after this went down, Pilot's business is booming. I would think many truckers and companies would tell Pilot to G F themselves.

Had there been viable alternatives they probably would have lost a lot of business.

I'm not sure exactly what sort of situation you are referring to, but I have never found Bill to be anything less than a great guy. I've never had any dealings with either Jim Sr or Jr., so I can't comment on them.

Sure, they push their weight around somewhat, and I would agree that some of the merit for giving is PR, but I believe they go WAY past that in their giving. UT and Knoxville are damn lucky to have this family in our community, IMO. And no, they aren't friends of mine nor do I work for Pilot.

being a 'Great guy' should mean nothing in business.......just as it shouldn't mean anything in hiring a football coach....

in the end its all about the Benjamins. P & FJ were the top dogs anyway and when they merged it crushed TA, Petro, and Loves. Even with TA & Petro merging they still cant cut cost enough to rival P/FJ. Their discounts and rebates mean a lot to those trucking companies.

They don't mean too much, if the trucking companies don't know how much they are owed

that's where you need to brush up on your knowledge of the trucking industry.

There are two ways a company gets a discount.

One is the rebate way which is what caused the initial problems. The company pays the full price as listed at the pump then Pilot sends them a rebate later based on their total purchases for the month. These are more for the smaller companies.

The second is POS (point of sale) discount. This is the price they pay at that instance at the pump. It could be discount ie $.03 off per gallon, it could be a cost plus discount (the rack rate of fuel they paid that day plus $.0x per gallon, or it could be the better of the two. The discounts are instant so its much harder to manipulate as the rates for rack and retail are published every day and can be monitored.

For the most part the trucking companies do know what they pay and what is owed. Its the smaller ones that dont have a sole dedicated fuel coordinator that can be fooled a bit which is what happened.

The trucking company can choice, whether they want the POS, or a rebate check...and depending on which option they choose, they should put a process in place to ensure they are receiving the correct rebate

if the choice isnt presented then there's no choice to take. All depends on how the sales rep spun it to them.

Pilot/FJ is huge and they have an economies of scale advantage especially east of the Mississippi

they're thieves and con men who should get jail time. Of course they'll get some bargain from the good ol boy network, pay a fine and move along with their lives. That's the American way
