The Banana Slug, a bright yellow, slimy, shell-less mollusk found in the campus's redwood forest, was the unofficial mascot for UC Santa Cruz's coed teams since the university's early years. The students' adoption of such a lowly creature for a team mascot was their reaction to the fierce athletic competition fostered at most American universities. UCSC has always offered a wide-ranging physical education and recreation program designed to appeal to the greatest number of students, but it has based its approach on some unusual ideas: that athletics are for all students, not just team members of major sports; that the most important goal of a collegiate physical education department should be to introduce as many students as possible to lifelong physical activities; and that the joy of participating is more important than winning.

Illinois "fighting illini" = ?
Texas Longhorn = its a cow.
Utep Miners = okey dokey
Oklahoma Sooner = as oposed to "Laters"

I like Aubie the tiger. And as far as Auburn having two mascots, they don't. Just because they cry "War Eagle" doesn't mean that's their mascot.

Either war, don't we have two mascots. Smokey and Davy Crockett?????

The Illini are a native american tribe.

"Sooner" is actually a synonym for "cheater." The term was used to describe settlers who entered unassigned areas of Oklahoma before they were proclamed open to settlement.


To the OP, the worst mascot I have ever seen is from Wofford College.....The Terriers! :eek:lol:

Favorite Mascot-Eagle the mascot from Georgia Southern

Most Hated-That homo that wears the paladin costume and rides the horse for furman. it was great when GSU was playin at their house and he rode out and fell off the horse.

Weirdest-Elon several years back was the "Fighting Christians"

One that I always get a kick out of is when they have the Battle of the Boulevard here in Nashville (David Lipscomb vs Belmont in basketball) and you will always see Belmont students with signs or t-shirts stating that there is no such thing as "Bisons".
