My favorite thing about John Ward was how he was always about 25 yards behind the play, but he kept counting down anyway after we scored. Like "he's at the 30. 25. 20. (we score) 15. 10. 5. TOUCHDOWWWWN TENNESSEEEEUH!

Being that Im a "newer" fan growing up in Ga, I never heard him call a game. And most of the stuff Ive heard from him, I heard on the decade of dominance dvd. That said, just listening to him and comparing him to Blob, he sounds about a million times more exciting and just...better.

You don't understand if you didn't grow up listening to him. Bob Kesling is GREAT. I don't want to take anything away from him because he bleeds orange probably more than anybody on this message board. But John Ward is something that will bring tears to people's eyes. The memories of not only the GREAT games, but just the memories of John Ward in general make any true UT fan very emotional.

I don't doubt that 20 years from now, there will be pure-blood Orange fans who will relate to Bob Kesling. My children and grandchildren will probably be the ones to remember Bob Kesling as I remember John Ward.

A good thing cannot last forever, and only after a lifetime can you compare 1 person to another. John Ward is my most favorite TN Vol, but that's just because he was the ONLY guy doing the games.

I sincerely hope that in the future my children and grandchildren enjoy Bob Kesling as much as I have enjoyed John Ward.

That's really a good way of putting it. Ward had a very distinct delivery that you just don't hear very much anymore. He was painfully awkward at times, but always memorable.

I am also a relitivly "new fan" so I never heard John Ward call a game. But I guess my "John Ward" is Mike Keith, who is the play-by-play for the Tennessee Titans. Being a Titans fan Mike sure can bring chills to my body!!!

"ITS A MIRACLEEEEEE! TOUCHDOWN TITANS! THERE ARE NOOOOOOO FLAGS ON THE FIELD!"

"SNAP, SET, KICK IS UP, ITS.......GOOOOOOOOOOD TITANS BEAT PITTSBURGH AND MOVE ON TO THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! NEDNEY SENDS THE STEELERS BACK TO THE NORTH WITH NO SOUP!"

Oh, I have no problem with Mike Keith. I just don't think we all need to hear about what he's doing to your body....

The crowd roars and roars, as 95,000 orange and white fans come to their feet, what time is it ladies and gentlemen? It's football time in Tennessee!!!!!

when i was growing up, and i know many of you did the same thing, we never listened to the tv broadcast, we'd mute the tV and put up John Ward and it just isnt' any better than that.

and i still get chills when i hear the "it's football time in Tennessee!!".......i do miss that every Sept. on the first game........it was like all the anticipation in the world finally got let loose once you heard that statement.......because it was, in fact, football time in Tennessee.....finally.

and you just can't compare BK to JW....it's not even close and it's not fair to BK, he'll never be what JW was, and i don't know there will ever be anyone like that again........

I grew up in GA as well. We used to find old Johnny on Internet radios and mute the idiots on the television. "Football Time in Tennessee" gives me chills to this day

In spite of the overwhelming trend towards generic, bland professional broadcasters -- e.g., Kesling, Kenny Albert -- there are still a few interesting guys out there. Most of them are toiling away in situations where nobody hears them -- the Atlanta Thrashers have a good, funny, original radio guy, but who listens to Thrashers hockey on the radio? -- but a few of them make it to the big time. Gus Johnson, for example.

The problem is that something like the Vol radio network is probably now considered to be big enough business that they wouldn't just stick anybody out there without much of a record in broadcasting, somebody who hadn't been to broadcasting school and had all the interesting idiosyncrasies ironed out of him, somebody like, uh, John Ward. Instead you're going to get somebody like Mr. Vanilla TV Guy, Bob Kesling.

He wasn't very colorful but I remember that when Bill Anderson said the Vols were controlling the line of scrimmage, things were going well.
