Bob is just fine, and beginning to grow on me.
Unfortunately, there will just never be another John Ward. Folks down here keep talking about the retirement of Larry Munson, and the sad fact is that there just aren't any of those old school colorful guys in the till anymore.
Todays announcers are built for television, not radio. One of the great things about J. Ward and Munson is that they trained to paint a picture with their words, and as such, are much more entertaining. TV guys seem to be much more bland, because that picture has already given the viewer 1000 words.
Case in point: "Travis Henry leaps to the four, spins to the three, and dives to the one... what did he do? What did he DO?? ALL HE DID WAS SCORE. TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE!!"
That play is over four words into the sentence, but the radio listener doesn't know that. That is the artistry of a classic radio announcer.
Bob seems to me to call the action as it happens, and leaves it at that; he's very good at that, as far as it goes.
Unfortunately, he is just not one of that dying breed most of us grew up on.
