We have a John Ward thread but what about our current voice of the Vols? The man has been calling UT games since 1999. Surely he has accumulated some memorable game quotes?

*I don't listen to him myself...but I've heard other SEC fans say he is not as bad or bland as we make him out to be*

I wish I had at least one myself...but ole Bob has never grown on me.

I thought that perhaps there are some Kesling fans out there that could contribute to this thread though.

Here's a good one from the Vandy game last year:

Coker breaks it to the 40! They'll never catch Coker! He's all the way for a Tennessee touchdown!

From Cal game last year:

Ainge, two step drop, quick out, that pass is complete! Breaking a tackle again....Robert Meachem!!! To the 40...To the 30....To the 20! To the 10! All the way for a Tennessee touchdown! 80 yards for Meachem his second big play of the night for a score!

Those are some of my favorites because they were great plays I guess. Bob doesn't have all the cool catch phrases that Ward had.

I still listen to Bob though. If there wasn't a delay in the TV/radio time I would still listen to the Vol network and just turn the TV down. You get more information that way. Because of satilite delay Kesling will say that a pass is complete long before the ball ever gets there, drives me nuts. I heard that they were trying to fix that problem though by delaying the radio broadcast by a couple of seconds though.

Is there anyone else that would do better? I think Mike Keith would do fine, but other than that I just don't know.

Bob is just fine, and beginning to grow on me.

Unfortunately, there will just never be another John Ward. Folks down here keep talking about the retirement of Larry Munson, and the sad fact is that there just aren't any of those old school colorful guys in the till anymore.

Todays announcers are built for television, not radio. One of the great things about J. Ward and Munson is that they trained to paint a picture with their words, and as such, are much more entertaining. TV guys seem to be much more bland, because that picture has already given the viewer 1000 words.

Case in point: "Travis Henry leaps to the four, spins to the three, and dives to the one... what did he do? What did he DO?? ALL HE DID WAS SCORE. TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE!!"

That play is over four words into the sentence, but the radio listener doesn't know that. That is the artistry of a classic radio announcer.

Bob seems to me to call the action as it happens, and leaves it at that; he's very good at that, as far as it goes.

Unfortunately, he is just not one of that dying breed most of us grew up on.

My impression of Kesling compared to Ward, is Ward was more prepared, more professional.

I know Kesling at one time was a sportscaster in Knoxville, I don't know if he still does that, but he could spend more time working on his delivery. Thats what made Ward unique, he had certain phases he developed over the years that became his trademark. I don't think most of those were ad-libbed. Ward had a law degree from UT, a very sharp guy, and it showed.

My favorite quote of Bob's is, "I quit."

Oh wait, that's just wishful thinking.

I only listen to him because it's the lesser of two evils compared to listening to the television announcers who will either be biased or idiots, or both. I wish Bob was a little more biased.

I love the use of the word 'We' by a team's announcers. With Bob, you might stumble upon him calling a game and never find out who he works for until the commercial when they announce it as the Vol network. He doesn't use the word 'We'. Tennessee deserves someone better. Someone with a pulse. Someone more like Bruce Pearl announcing!

That's simply not true. Kesling is as bad an announcer as there is currently employed by a major college program.

Not even close . . . I've spent some time over in SC and can tell you that the Clemson play by play man along with Todd Ellis over at South Carolina both make Bob Kesling sound like Vin Scully.

I would listen to Todd Ellis on a 24 hour loop before I would listen to Lardarse Kesling for 30 seconds.
You'd never make it 24 hours with Todd Ellis without piercing your ear drums. Heck, half the Carolina fans can't handle him. If you've never heard him, he sounds like a drunk version of Tony Shiavone trying to do college football.
