I've never played a FO game. But I hear a ton of goods things about it. What's it all about?

You really should play FO3 and New Vegas if you have a 360 or PS3 still (FO3 will work on Xbox One next month). They're arguably top 5 and top 25 games from the previous generation and they're stupid inexpensive right now.

Saw a commercial the other day, the graphics look amazing

The graphics??

Yes. Any graphics below Witcher 3's standards are now considered archaic according to the internet.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas were hideous games and people still loved them. Any complaining about F4 graphics is just being contrarian for the hell of it.

Well, when devs take their time to create truly awesome games with depth, I can see where graphics might take a backseat. For me, gameplay always trumps prettiness

"Graphics downgrade" is such a poor platform to start pissing yourself about. As long as the graphics look clean and above last gen quality, I will gladly have them downgraded a tad for the sake of gameplay......much like with the Division. People still are in this fantasy world that current gen consoles should be on par with high end PCs as far as graphics and that's just never going to be possible

After watching some of the leaked videos, the dialogue is my primary concern. I don't really care about the voiced protagonist in theory, but the delivery is wooden and the actual dialogue seems simplistic.

Small sample size, though.

It's mostly because they used their outdated Creation Engine which is what was used on Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Granted, they've tweaked and refined the engine to make it better but there reaches a point where there's only so much you can do with it. Personally I'm fine with the graphics but it does look more like an HD remaster of a last gen game to me with missing LOD's, shadows, poor textures, etc than it does a true next gen game. My guess is Bethesda will introduce their new engine with the next installment of The Elder Scrolls. I'm still looking forward to playing Fallout 4 however.

In the future a nuvlear war breaks out. People get pushed into underground safety places called Vaults. Each game you emerge from a Vault and travel the wasteland trying to survive. Basically, Elder Scrolls but a futuristic gun-toting game. The stories are nice and the free roam tons-of-quests thing is fun to play.

Kinda.

The Fallouy universe diverges from ours around ~1945 as they never develop the transistor and instead focus on other developments (namely atomic). The Great War that lead to everything being post-apocalyptic is still in the future from now though. It's in like the latter half of the 21st century.

I've always liked playing a melee character... never worry about ammo and can do some brutal finishing moves

okay, I see what everyone's talking about with the graphics; definitely looks last gen - especially the character models and facial movements.

can't wait. as others have said I will give up graphics for gameplay and story line. Hate all these games with amazing graphics and no depth.

I've never played a FO game. In the opinion of the masses here, would I need to be caught up on previous storylines in order to understand what's going on? Or could I start with 4 and be comfortable?

You will be fine starting with 4. I do recommend playing 3, and Las Vegas at some point if you have something to play them on.

What are you playing it on, Chatt? 3 comes with 4 on X1, but if you have a PS3 they're less than $15 for GOTY editions and they're worth 4 times that.

I honestly just can't wait to build up a stronghold with bottlenecks to funnel enemies into for slaughtering. That's what I'm most hyped about. The modders will go crazy with this and I can't wait to make a base with Star Wars parts defended by New Order storm troopers , you know there's gonna be mods of those.

Reviews are really good but many performance issues on consoles. A lot of frame rate drops below 30fps. I am still pumped though.
