Fair points for both sides from Andy Staples

Halfway through February and almost every thread is filled with the same thing since November.

It's the scheme, it's Butch holding to tight, it's player development, it's Vandy and USC were inexcusable, it's the tempo, it's Butch's ceiling, and champions of life.

Shouldn't be surprised since we still have people caught up on the BSIA comment from 2012 but man it's redundant.

So what are acceptable responses for a thread about an article questioning whether Butch has peaked at UT?

"15-0 in 2017 baby! Book it!"

"John Kelly gonna win the Heisman next year wooooo"

"WGWTFA!"

That's what we should be responding with?

Would it be considered redundant considering every thread has someone complaining that the same things are talked about over and over?

The same back and forth can be nauseating but it's much better than the alternative, apathy.

So you found a post to back up your claims?

That you think Butch walks on water and you're dating him? Haha. Lots of people in this world now days don't want to accept responsibility for themselves and like blame others, not sure why you seem surprised that some post here.

It's also interesting that my post a couple of weeks ago about the similarities between the fans that really don't like Butch and Butch himself, seems to be showing more evidence of being true. :loco:

He already had one chance to but hired DeBord.

Debord was NEVER the problem. Our offense had TWO record breaking years statistically.
Ya'll keep stuck on a couple of bad offensive games. I don't give a F#$% who you hire as coordinator... you're gonna have bad games.

Give the DeBord hate a rest already. He's gone. Get over it.

You know I'm not really surprised :)

DeBord absolutely was the problem early in the year with his atrocious playcalling and in the South Carolina game (and Hurd).

We forget just how awful DeBord was in the App St and Ohio games and for extended periods of time in the Virginia Tech, Florida, and Georgia games. He rebounded against A&M even though they turned it over 7 times, we can throw out the Bama game, then he was awful again in the South Carolina game. He rebounded against vastly inferior competition late in the year which is what allowed the offense to break some records.

Ok, so I'll throw him a bone: by the end of the year, he figured out how to rack up yards and points against bad defenses. He couldn't do that earlier in the year.

It's what happens among fans when letting the SEC East slip through their fingers becomes a broken record.

Butch, Butch, Butch, Butch, Butch... Man! This forum sounds like a POed Carolina Wren!

My hopes center around the Vols themselves, the student athletes wearing the orange & white. Yeah, Butch needs to show he's not a "Big Game Bob." Bob Shoop's second year needs to manifest in exponentially better, more consistent on-field defensive play. Tennessee needs to be Badass, a team that frustrates others' hopes for victory, and that my friends isn't realizable just from coaching. It's a team thing. They either have it, or they don't. Please, Lord, let Team 121 have it. Amen, and pop the top off that Nehi.

That's the spirit.

It's gonna play itself out. Most likely 121 will be the team that defines Butch's time at UT.
Whether it's gloom and doom or warm and fuzzy, hopefully we will all get an answer to the question. Can he do it?

Never rule out the possible until it's impossible.

Release the Beast!

I get that 100%. I was let down by not going to Atlanta just like everyone else. 7 turnovers at A&M, getting wrecked by Bama, then the big nasty of losing to USC and Vandy were absolutely deflating all around. I am looking forward to spring practices so maybe the majority will start looking forward instead of backwards but I see the 2016 shortcoming coming up from now until the fall from some.

I think it's fair to say Butch is an average SEC coach. Better than Dooley of course, but is that good enough?

I think Butch's position is similar to what Dabo Sweeney experienced not that long ago. Nobody felt like Dabo was the guy to get it done either. But he obviously upgraded his staff. Results speak for themselves. Here's to hoping we get similar results.

Swinney went 9-5 his first year, 6-7 his second year, and hasn't won less than 10 games in any season since. Neither their situations nor performances are similar at all.

You include Florida 2015 as supposed to win? I just checked Odds Shark and the best Tennessee line was even, the best Florida line was 2.5.

Shouldn't have lost the lead we had, I agree!
But you're just making stuff up with the "was supposed to win"

That's one of those "shudda" won(s). Along with Oklahoma that year and Arkansas. He's just not a power 5 coach!

not referring to record comparisons at all. Simply referring to the fact that Swinney was also on the hot seat after the 2010 season as evidenced by the linked article and there were plenty more like that one. I just remember similar hoopla from back then as I hear right now about BJ. Clemson turned it around and so can UTK.

I don't think that Debord's leaving bodes well. If he thought he was going to have evenn close to the success in 2017 with one of the new QBs, as he did with Dobbs in 2016, there's no reason to take a lateral move to Indiana, as we could have parlayed 2017 success into a substantial raise at UT. I think he got out while his numbers looked as good as they ever would under CBJ's offense.

As far as Shoop goes, the jury is still out. Even healthy, we struggled a lot, against a lot of teams. I hope the changes at DL, and DB are the keys to getting his system working at UT, but there's just too much unknown there to say for sure right now.

Our DLine covered for a weak secondary the past few years. Just as Dobbs feet covered for a bad Oline. I welcome the new coaches. I hope Scott and Wells turn out to be superstars.
I think Deboard was helping out Butch.

It's all fine to tout 9-wins seasons, but when your conference record is 5-3 and 4-4, and some of that shine rubs off considering 3 of those 9 wins in 2016 were against, App State, Ohio, and TN Tech.

If we are winning 9 games a year, but still aren't even winning our division, much less competing for SEC championships, what's the point? If Butch's goal is winning championships, there's no path to the CFB playoffs that don't involve winning the SEC.

Butch has the Bama autoloss from the west. You can add LSU for this year. Even if we beat FL and GA we may have to slide into ATL. Not worried about SC and Vandy if we are healthy. KY?
