Take the class, write up the birthing plan, have someone there to film it. For us, my oldest son was my 3rd kid and my wife's first. We did it all and believe me it helped. Of course we left our copy of the birthing plan at home and the staff overlooked the copy in her chart, so we didn't have the soothing music, reduced lighting, natral style birth. Instead, we had my wife cussing like a soldier, my mother saying "why does she keep using the f-word?" and the MPs escorting the anesthesiologist to the hospital. Then during the birth, my mom was in charge of filming the event. We got the moment of his head coming out, then the camera kind of veers off to the side for a minute as the rest of him emerges off camera, then the camera comes back on target to my wife's crotch, while I'm cutting the umbilical cord and our son starts crying etc, again, all off camera. We have about 5 minutes of video of her nether regions and about 5 seconds of the actual birth.
The point of all of this is the process helps, but in the end, the doctors and nurses really know their stuff and everything will be alright. It is a great event and your life will be changed for the better.
