This isn’t accurate. Joyce wasn’t drafted in 21 and was recovering from TJ surgery. He was an unknown.
Here's how it works. Unlike the NFL where you get drafted and have no choice, the MLB draft gives you a choice based on $. The team makes a call to you/your agent prior to drafting you, to ask if you will accept a specific amount. If you come to that agreement privately, they will take you with their pick. The MLB team needs to have that agreement prior to drafting you otherwise, they waste a draft pick. It's all agreed upon prior to the announcement. Joyce was offered 6 digits by a NL east coast team. He turned it down to come to Tennessee, play SEC ball, and get his degree. As for being drafted while recuperating from TJ? Well, just look at HS pitcher Dylan Lesko had TJ earlier this year and he will be a 1st rounder, and there's a slew of others. As for unknown on Joyce? He was bangin' 100+ at Walters State and had a following of MLB Teams. Here's the article from 2020.

Looks like Joyce's gamble on himself and go back to school will pay off. Turned down 6 digits and I'm thinking he is somebodies 2nd pick this year where the slots are between $1m - $1.9m Picked up his degree as well.
