Expect 16 team playoff as soon as possible.

I miss the bcs
Just can’t keep anything nice, can we? A system that actually made sense and largely took emotion and bias out of the selection process. At least the BCS still more or less made bowl season more meaningful. Now we just have a bunch of throwaway games played by the scrubs cause all the starters want to sit it out. Been watching college football since ‘87 and I barely recognize it anymore.

Yeah, it is crap. The only way to make it a remotely level playing field is to completely do away with the automatic qualifier. If you are ranked in the final top 12(or 16 or whatever it ends up, you're in). If you need an automatic qualifier for your conference champion to be included, then your conference isn't worthy of inclusion.
Makes sense, so it won't happen.

I said this a few years ago that E$PN wanted to eliminate conference championships. Well....they hinted at it on Sunday. Just some very small talk about championships.

This is EXACTLY what they started doing with the BCS before nearly everyone was convinced we had to get rid of it.

What they'll do is expand the CFP to 14 teams with a 4 teams "playing in" for the final two spots. More revenue time due to more games.

ESPN loves controversy (like last Sunday) as it improves their viewership and click rate. It's all about $ with E$PN.

16 teams solves part of the problem. But the problem with extreme differences in schedule difficulty will require us to reduce the number of teams in the pool…we’ve got something like 134 teams in the ten conferences and then some teams still schedule lower division schools…we’ll need to drop 50-60 teams back to Div 2 and then only allow teams to schedule Div 1 (and I realize I’m using old terminology)…

Go to sixteen - do away with the stupid championship games and have a play in for the last four spots like the ncaa basketball do it with 68 and play in games in Dayton. It doesn't seem to be as much fussing with the ncaa basketball tourney these days but of course Tenn has not been outside looking in the past few years. May be that way this year with the way our season is going.

The transfer portal is the straw that broke the bowls. The current calendar makes no sense.

eliminate conference championships, eliminate CFP rankings until it begins (they are pointless other than for show), expand the playoffs to 16 and have play in games(?) which will include probably 16-20ish, begin the playoffs the week after the final regular season game ends

8 team playoff based on BCS.

It will never happen, but this is the way.
I used to be right there with you with the 8 teams, but as we sit here today, we have an Indiana team as the 1 seed who just beat a juggernaut Ohio State team. We have Vandy who has just as much right to be in the CFP as any other 2 loss team. The G5 somehow and ridiculously has 2 spots in a 12 team CFP and Notre Dame has a guaranteed spot beginning next season if they finish 12 or higher. The haves still mostly rule the game, but I think we’re past the point where only 4-5 teams can win it. I honestly would have no issue w/ a 16 team CFP if you’re gonna have to have the G5 charade and Notre Dame staying independent. If it means giving us more home CFP games on college campuses and starting the playoff earlier I can definitely get on board.

If the sport is going to split into more divisions, it won’t be along the P4 and G5 line. The big name teams will see no reason to include a Boston College or Purdue or MS State or Stanford, or any other small name teams that don’t bring in many viewers.
There is no way to have a playoff that fairly includes G5 and P4 schools, it's generally men versus boys. That is a quick fix. I agree with you there will eventually be a split out of the schools spending the most money, probably 32 teams, then they will not play outside the division and have anNFL playoff system and rules. That will come automatically as more money is needed to pay players and coaches. Money is like water, its flow is predictable.

Well I'm glad Vandy got left out, but I'm petty like that. Lol

If we go to 16 teams I think they should get rid of conference championship games since that is what causes the issues. Go old school and reward them based on season record, take the top 16 teams based purely on rank and play the first and second round on college campuses.

Many of us said years ago that the expanded playoff would not make it more fair and would only lead to unforeseen complications. But in the name of "fairness" we have gone down the path to lunacy.

OTOH, I am so happy to see Notre Dame left out and watching Joe Theismann and these other spoiled, entitled domers whine like babies. They have been coddled and given every benefit imaginable since before I was born. They built their legacy playing weak sisters and HIDING from real competition. The vaunted mystique of Notre Dame Football is a media-generated fraud. Their sweetheart deal for an automatic CFP berth starting next season is even more of a reason to celebrate them being left out this year. Honestly, seeing them, for once in their pampered and privileged existence, made to sit out -- and watching them cry their little eyes out and pout and throw their little hissy fit -- is the greatest thing to happen in cfb in years.

Call me when someone lower than a 4 seed wins it all. Although this year I thought Notre Dame was legit.
Certainly they would have had a better chance than Tulane or James Madison. Until the playoffs stop gifting teams in, this is what we have.

I predicted this from the get-go.

The basketball tournament is 68 freaking teams, and teams #69 and #70 will constantly whine as if it's absolutely vital that an 18-14 team be in the hunt for the national championship.

If anything they should scale it back to 6 teams.

Scale basketball tournament back to 32 teams in best of 3 format.
Yeah but the consolation carrot is already there, the NIT.

I think that’s a great idea. I don’t think any of the commissioners would give up that $ grab, but I wouldn’t opposed to a play in game type weekend where you can call it a “24 team CFP” , but in actuality it’s just a scenario where bubble teams play each other (don’t really have the time to work out details) , but some version of that. The top 2 seeds don’t want play each other in Atlanta or Indy, might as well have 2 with everything on the line fight to get in.
