Very good read on Brady Hoke and how some of his former players felt about him and his coaching style.

A few quotes from the article:

“The first thing he did at Michigan when we broke the first team meeting was come into the defensive line meeting room. His passion lies in the defensive line room,” said Ryan van Bergen, who played defensive end for Hoke at Michigan in 2011. “That is where he likes to focus his energy and where he feels most comfortable.”

“He is going to be tough on them at first. Coach Hoke is such a technician and so detailed. His standards are so high that at first it’s going to be really challenging,” Haines said. “Probably the first half of spring ball, those defensive linemen at Tennessee will be thinking ‘This guy is unhappy with anything that I do. Nothing is good enough for this guy.’ But that’s just him elevating the standard he wants set.”

“They can expect physicality. Coach Hoke isn’t someone that has a lot of fancy, finesse moves. His standard is to dominate the line of scrimmage physically,” van Bergen said. “We don’t run around guys. We are running plays to go through the offensive line. There is no such thing as evading blocks. That doesn’t happen when you play for Coach Hoke. When you play for Coach Hoke, you beat the guy in front of you and then go make the play.”

An attitude that we have need for some time. I just wonder how it will play with what I see as a finesse first offense.

Hoke, I hope ends up being the Homerun hire of this staff. We need a fire lit under the entire defense and the DL is a great place to start!!!

Imagine McKenzie, Tuttle, and Kongbo operating at maximum potential on the same line.

Scary......for Gators

Prove it Hoke.

Your efforts against salami haven't been a confidence builder. Your job: negate salami oline. You do that and I will by you your first six. You can name your beer.

He's worth every penny if he can land the elite interior linemen. The last 1/3 of the season shows what happens in the SEC when you are reduced to gimmicks on the interior DL. Do the opposite and miraculously the back 2 levels of the D get really good.

I really like the Hoke hire for DL coach, I think it was Jones' best hire.

However, I'm gonna temper some excitement here because I think Strip was a very good DL coach as well. And I'm certain he taught the technical aspects of playing on the DL and I'm pretty sure he also wanted his guys to play with great physicality.

Can Hoke do those things better than Strip? Dunno, maybe he can, I hope he can. But I'm not sure why we should get overly stoked based on this article, no offense.

Gotta agree with KB here. I hope he is the end all-be all coach we want on the staff, but I'm gonna wait and see. He is one of the best and I hope it translates to the field where the DL runs roughshod over everyone. I have seen too many times a player, coach or group gets builtup to be perfect and then chaos ensues when it doesnt happen.

Hoke coaches defensive line. But practicing against what he might bring? I would think our OL will be forced to raise their intensity as well.

How much can "Non-Coaches" like Stripling participate in practices and giving coaching advice?

if ex-players are behind hoke, that's big.

Actually it is pretty common. He recruited and spent a few years working with those guys. 80% of your coaches will get praise from his guys, even if the fans and administrators want them fired.

So what they say doesn't tell you much. How they play speaks volumes.
