Estrella Comparison

Devoe beat McHale the Monday after the 1979 Volunteer Classic in Stokely. Reggie Johnson. Howard Wood. Dale Ellis. Bert Bertelkamp. Gary Carter. Steve Ray. Kevin Nash. I’m not sure when Carter and Nash left the program.
I stayed in Knoxville for mini-term and actually saw that game. Randy Breur was a 7’3” freshman and also went on to have a lengthy career in the NBA. We beat Arizona State in the finals of the Vol Classic. ASU had Kurt Nimphius, Byron Scott, and Fat Lever.

He was a big man who was soft.
Perhaps you are referencing the rest of his career, but 7 rebounds/gm in the SEC as a freshman doesn't sound soft. Like I said, he was never the same player after that first year when he had to miss most of his second season following shoulder surgery to remove blood clots. He seemed out of shape and never regained form.

Absolutely! Houston took our Bigs to school in the tournament last spring.

Also Purdue, Michigan, and Oregon State before that. Even Loyola-Chicago when Kyle Alexander missed that one due to an injury. We did address the Florida Atlantic guard problem… now the front court as well.

I like the roster. I wasn’t even concerned when Ament sat down with foul trouble.

For those of you old enough to remember, does JP Estrella remind you of Kevin McHale? I’m not saying he’s anywhere near that level, but the way he moves and his arms reminds me of McHale. Would love it if he ends up being half as good.
I came to the forum today to essentially post the same thing before I saw yours. He REMINDED me of Mchale with his feathery touch right around the rim. His little jump half hook seems to be a high percentage weapon. The style comparison came to me earlier in the season and has been reinforced in this tournament.

I have a friend that reminds me of Valerie Bertinelli. That doesn't mean she's a copy of her .

They called Kevin McHale the black hole in college. He was the main scoring threat, and the idea was that any time you threw the ball into him it was like a black hole, because it was not coming back out. 😂

Are you comparing a sophmore JP Estrella to the NBA version of McHale? If so, that's hardly a fair comparison. If you want to compare the two players, look at Kevin McHale's sophmore year at Minnesota and compare that with Estrella this year, who by the way, has been limited to 11 minutes of playing time for nearly half his games due to injury.

I assume the 1% reference is hyperbole.
Yeah…I was trying to remember when he played at Minnesota. McHale wasnt THE KEVIN MCHALE we all knew until prob his last year in college. And REALLY developed into the great player he was while in the NBA. Hard to compare IMHO.

We still should have beat Loyola without Kyle. That really wasn't our problem that day. A higher power channeled through Sister Jean was in the building 😊

I was at that game, it was a battle. The Gophers also had Trent Tucker, who had a long NBA career. I remember they had a skinny 7’3 freshman on the bench in Randy Bruer

They were on a mission from God. They won 14 games in a row (including their conference tournament) until being eliminated in the national semis.
I remember when were were up by 2 late in that game, one of their guards shot a line drive brick that hit the front of the rim, bounced straight up and went down for 3. We were doomed after that
