ESPN/Chris Mortensen report

Well I like that we are approaching guys like Lovie. We need a big name. Kelly is not the answer. So why not approach Billick and others, maybe even some OCs or DCs in the NFL.
So it's more important to get a "big name" than a good coach?

"leading"... "prime"... seems like you are being difficult and trying to split hairs.

It really only makes a difference whether it was "a" or "the" leading into it..."a prime candidate" would seem to be accurate based on everything we've heard. "The leading" candidate would probably be "new" news.

Generally Big Names are good coaches. You do not become an NFL HC or OC/DC by being bad at what you do. They are better at Xs and Os then Kelly I guarantee you that and Kelly is a joke at recruiting. Kelly equals disaster. Historically, NFL guys can recruit when they come down to College based on the NFL name they bring with them. And Xs and Os wise again if they survived in the NFL they are better at Xs and Os and making guys better than 90 percent of the guys in college.

To me, leading means the one. A prime, means there are others that could be considered the same.

Awyway, that was the quote. Make what you will from it.

BTW, I backed it up and watched it again so I would get it right and not speak in generalities that would be misleading.

you mean i wasted my morning for that news!!!!!!!!!Hire the coach when the best one is available and you know that for certain Hamilton. We can still land recruits if you wait until the very end of bowl season..

I edited your post to more accurately describe the correct method in making such an important hire.

When he was on Sports Animal, he talked mostly about Kiffin and mentioned Gruden when asked and of course poo pooed the idea that Gruden would be interested. I do not remember him mentioning Lovie Smith on the show so I guess that was his big news.

Yes, thank you for proving my point those guys are all good recruiters. Weis do I have to prove this, Wanstedt has the most talent in the Big East will beat Cincy next week and go to BCS. Callahan recruited well was bringing talent back to Nebraska, he cannot coach D and lost his team. He is an offensive genius period--he should be an OC though is not the kind of leader to be HC.

Al Groh is doing a great job, so are you trying to prove me wrong or helping me out?

I was trying to type and listen at the same time

I mangled the quote....he has the advantage of DVR and could pin it down word for word and I could not.

That's it.

Agree. "Leading" singles out a candidate, "prime" does not.

Words mean things.

I can't believe we're doing this...but I still think that the words "the prime" candidate mean the same as "the leading." Instead, he said "a prime," which means "a leading" candidate. It seems to me that the key difference is the use of the word "a" over the word "the."

IMO, As quickly as Mort flew over Kiffin's name we may be all making too much of him anyway. It was almost an aside to the Gruden and Smith details. I really don't think Mort knows any more than we do regarding this.

Al Groh is doing a great job?

Your agument was based on big names coaches haing two advantages... being able to recruit and being better at X's and O's.

Even though some of these guys are able to step into more living rooms because of NFL experience, that doesn't make them better coaches on game day...

We've already gone though 17 years of having a great recruiter and poor gameday coaching. How about we actually go out and get a good coach that can develope the talent we have.
