Elander @3rd

He discussed it at length in the post game interview, pointing directly to communication with the staff and players at critical moments.

Good on you, chuckie, for acknowledging the truth. 👍

Infallibility of coaches is not a thing. We should accept their flaws and mistakes even more than our own. Recognizing the error of one's ways relatively soon in the process and making a positive change is a great thing. That tells me that we may indeed have the right HC to lead this team. Young team and first year staff needs the communication throughout the game in the dugout by the leader. The coaches can also talk to each other more about what they see.

One is for the staff to quit waiting one batter too long before making a pitching change. You haae two on base and the pitcher struggling, make the change. The next guy needs the margin of error to locate the plate. Second, to then make the change based not only on the opponent's lineup but also on conditions. Josh blew that twice with Krenzel. First, with the rain at UGA when it was clear he could not control his pitches. Grip pressure and feel is a thing in damp weather. Second was Vandy. Do not use power pitchers with fastballs that stay straight or rise. Krenzel's do that - they move laterally. Fly balls with gale force winds behind them do not end well for the pitcher and defense. Use junkballers, preferrably lefties, that get the ball lower and dart in and out of the zone. That helps get the batters out in front and whiff or roll over to hit weak grounders.

I believe Josh will be a fast learner and do well here.

I will say this now. I think this will hurt us. You took someone who had been the 3rd base coach for years and replaced him with someone who has never been there as far as I know. In the middle of SEC play, someone has to learn to coach 3rd. If you have never been there, you don't understand. It is totally different than coaching first. You have to make split second decisions that can definitely change games. I could see it yesterday as he was looking to the dugout for advice as to what E wanted to do. He can learn but it is not going to be easy. And I hope no one who has asked for this complains when it bites us and it will bite us but hopefully not in a really bad way. It is a process to learn when to send a runner and when to hold him. When to move from the runner going home to the runner coming into second so you can coach him. I promise you for those of you who have not coached third in high tense situations you don't have a clue until you do it. First is just saying go to second on the easy ones and making sure the players know the signs that are being given. Third is winning or losing games. I feel like he knows this is not the right time to do it but felt the pressure from those around him. There is a reason many of the top college coaches did it on a regular basis early on and some stayed there. It is control. And when you put someone else there you give up control. If I could give advice to him/them, it would be to have him watch video games and decide when to send and when to hold. You do that in the fall in real life but now it is in the middle of do or die games that could mean people keeping or losing their jobs by winning or losing these games. MY opinion and mine only. I hope it works out but it is a scary move. And don't say look at the results yesterday. AP is not a good team.
Elander discussed this right off the bat in the post game show with JWilk. He mentioned Bell who had experience coaching 3rd, but had been under the weather. He referenced specific examples of where he thinks it would help the team. IMO, I’m glad we’ve got a guy that sees something isn’t clicking and is adjusting. Looks like a lot of folks were heavily invested in diffusing the narrative.

We’ll see!!!

Let me make it clear. I had not heard about Bell coaching which will work because he has experience. I just knew you could not teach someone to coach third in the heat of SEC. It looks easy but is very complicated. And I think E is a great guy and will get the team where it needs to be. We have a great connection with his family so cheering for him.

I know you have connections that most don't and always appreciate your takes! I think coach E making this move is likely a good thing, with having Bell to step in, and really like that he saw a potential issue and addressed it quickly.

I'm not in the gloom and doom post TV camp. Any new coach needs time! We lost a really good coach but feel we replaced him with a good one. Time will tell. Go Vols!!!

Great fan turn out Tuesday! I think these boys can get it going. Great opportunity this weekend. It’s not as if they weren’t competitive at Vandy. They were in every game. Just gotta learn to win and finish.
