early 2017 predictions

Way early for this; far too many unknowns at this point (staff changes, S&C, recruiting class, returning starters, etc.) But what the hell.

GT - L Until we can seal the edge on defense, this is a bad, bad matchup for us.

Indiana State - W Blowout.

@UF - Toss Florida loses a huge number of defensive players. But it is on the road with a first year starter at QB.

UMASS - W Blowout.

UGA - W At Neyland, so we get the edge. Smart still installing his system.

USC JR - Toss Until Butch shows he can beat Muschamp, this remains a toss.

Bama - L Blowout.

UK - W Butch likes beating up Kentucky.

Southern Miss - W A win, but closer than it should be.

@Mizzou - W New Vandy.

vs LSU -L Too much talent to overcome. The losing streak to the West continues.

Vandy - W Butch better have this one circled and be out for blood.

I think we will see an improved running game and passing game this coming season. Hurd didn't fit our scheme. Once we got the other guys in our running game looked much better and it wasn't just Kamara.

We will miss Dobbs' legs, but I believe we will have an improved passing game. Dobbs, no matter how intelligent, didn't get through his progressions quickly enough and struggled to make throws, especially when he wasn't involved in the running game. The qb runs will likely go down, but down the field throws should go up.

In 1960 the Dallas Cowboys hired Tom Landry. In his first year they were 0-11-1, the next 4 years didn't produce more than 5 wins each. After that he was given a 10 year contract. I realize Butch isn't Tom Landry, but he is taking us in the right direction. Don't forget that changing coaches every couple of years continually sets the program back. We don't have to like our losses, but lets stand behind Butch. GBO

When you look from the sky, you only see wins and yes Butch was on an upward trend in wins and recruiting. As of now, that trend line is at a plateau in general record and on a downtrend in SEC record.

His recruiting has seemed to level off and we are moving backwards. Hooray for top 15 class and that is what you see from the sky.

From the sky, other teams in our division have worse coaches, first time coaches, or rejects.


However when you get into the details, we have lost 4-5 games in the last two years where we should have won. We have missed out on two SEC East division titles that we should have cakewalked into.

Recruiting is what it is... I do think Butch is working tirelessly on the trail, but we are moving backwards right now in recruiting classes.

USC has upgraded in coaching and recruiting by hiring Butch's nemesis. Mason has Vandy on the upswing and if Andy Ludwig leaves Vandy as OC, it could be dangerous as Ludwig wasn't that good of an OC. Mason has the keys to the castle and could easily get 1-2 million to hire a new OC.

From the Sky, UT seems to be heading up and there is no reason for the frustrations. However from the ground, Butch has been the main reason for frustrations through coaching issues or the self inflicting cliches and excuses.

I hope we finally go over the hump and get to Atlanta next year, but if we miss out on Atlanta yet again in 2017, Butch deserves to be fired.

Based on recruiting talent composite/location/coaching history...

8-4 (4-4), coaching search. I feel strongly about UF/Bama being losses. Four swing games in my mind in terms of the three factors above: UGA, SC, Mizzou, LSU. I assume TN splits those. The Mizzou/UF losses: CBJ is 11-8 at Tennessee against teams with less talent on a four-year rolling average based on 247 rankings. (3-10 against those more talented.) LSU: 0-8 vs. SEC West. Bama: Bama.

7-5 and if we get lucky 8 and 4 and trip to the Belk or Liberty Bowl, Butch is a 8 and 4 coach with a 9 win season every now and then, the truth hurts sometimes but that is who he is could be worse remember Dooley awaiting on Former Vol JIM BOB COTTER to come marching home in 20 18 he is a top OC WITH THE LIONS A LOT ON HERE WILL THINK THIS IS A JOKE BUT ONE DAY OLD jim bob cotter WILL LEAD THE VOLS.:eek:hmy:

I like it when fans don't expect anything good to come from the 2017 season, except Butch being fired...it usually turns out much better than expected...heck wouldn't doubt us winning the East....no, I'm not drunk...:)

I will wait to see what happens on signing day. There are a couple or three difference makers in this recruiting class.

I remember when these were posted before the beginning of this past season. The optimism was high! The expectations of going 10-2 or 9-3, winning the east etc.... I think in reality that with guys like Dobbs, Kamara, Barnette being gone 7-5 is going to be closer to reality. I hope they prove me wrong. We were pretty close to being 6-6 this year. A hail mary against Georgia & a fumble with App St saved us from that outcome

There are also several chicken ****s in this thread. Predicting 7-5 at best? Dumb. 8-4 is the absolute floor next year. 9-3 is likely
