early 2017 predictions

Too many unknowns. We'll probably get a very good idea right out of the gate against GT. If they run over us, then it's 6 or 7 more than likely, because that would mean they haven't fixed the defense yet. That triple option forces you to be gap sound and stay home, also requires you to be disciplined and tackle well. All the things the Vols did poorly this year. It's all about fixing the defense. Offense doesn't have to be world beaters but you can't hide a bad defense for long.

That's what a lot of people don't realize about the triple option. It's old but a lot of teams don't see it at all and can beat you. Tennessee does nothing well enough to make me believe they'll win.

I think a lot of folks really underestimate how many busted plays his legs saved the team from being huge losses.

You'll see how much better he made this line look than it is.

I'm sure one of the lineman will declare and Richmond will start. Yikes!

We've struggled against it just about every time we've played it. I remember Air Force running up and down the field on Johnny's defense. I cringe at the thought of playing them with what we have right now. They would rush for 1k yards in a single game..

I hope Shoop fixes things but I don't have faith he will.

Even with the 1s his D wasn't anything to write home about.

Here's a question - if Butch has a 2017 season like 2016 (8-5/9-4) does he get fired? Not "should he be fired" but rather "do you think he actually would be fired?"

Isn't that still a tough sell to some people to fire a coach who goes 27-12 (or thereabouts) over 3 years? I think it is, but it wouldn't be without precedent (Nebraska did it with Bo Pelini).

I think that is the only situation in which his fate is uncertain. 6-6/7-5 he's definitely gone, and with 10+ wins and/or a SECCG appearance he stays.

They looked like they were thinking too much and not playing fast a lot of times. Maybe his scheme is too complicated. I don't know what it was, but the defense took a huge step backwards..

Something happened specifically in the last 3 games of the season. I thought the defense was adequate up until then.

My prediction is that Butch Jones is fired after week 3.

We will hire an AD that will actually have a replacement lined up before we fire the coach the way it should be done.

I predict a lot of useless post like this one but good for a laugh.

He would need an incredible amount of luck to be here past 2017. The schedule isn't favorable with all the pieces that don't return.

8-4 isn't possible.

Losing to much talent 2016 was his 10W year.

Bama, LSU, Fl, and Georgia all loses.
Mix in GT, Vandy, and SC That could be losses too.

That doesn't leave a lot of wins

No tackles, no quality depth at linebacker, no safeties.. Adequate was all it was. Problem is.. You don't pay a guy a cool million to have just a adequate defense. There were things he could have down schematically to help the team out. Doug Matthews, repeated them several weeks in a row. They never did much to help out that situation, truly it might have helped a little. Most good defenses start with a good Dline. At the end of the year, it was Derrick Barnett bull rushing for sacks and not much else.

Shoop said he dumbed it down for them.

Do we not have high football IQ guys?

I think 8-4 is certainly possible. Losing "only" to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and LSU gets you there. He absolutely cannot afford to lose any games besides those. A lot of it is going to depend on how his new QB, whoever it winds up being, plays.

6-6 is also possible. 10-2 would be some kind of miracle.

Knowing he loses those 4 Butch is still Butch and wk lose one or two he shouldn't

I have no idea. Reuben Foster of Alabama can't put a coherent sentence together, but he looks like a million dollars on Saturdays. :ermm:

That's the brilliance of Saban, or any great coach for that matter. You recruit and structure your roster in a way where you aren't in a position to have to ask guys to do things they aren't good at.

You're absolutely right about Foster - my two and a half year old nephew speaks about as well as him. But clearly he understands his job.

Yep, it's coaching which makes me feel worse about Shoop. He did what he was suppose to do though: beat Florida.

Makes you wonder how he passes his classes. Oh forget it, we already know how he passes his classes.
