E3 2010

I don't know how you guys could be talking about Star Wars Battlefront III when you have The stellar looking Star Wars Kinect coming. Looks incredible....

In what fantasy world?

The fantasy world called every major gaming publication/website.

I'm not saying I like it, just saying Microsoft sucked something awful this year. They might as well not have even shown up if that's the best they were going to show.

The people who are buying Nintendo products are probably people who have never even heard of E3 - so oh well.

Ummm, no.

Whatever you think about Nintendo and their current strategy, they are still pretty big even with "hardcore" gamers. Zedla and Mario gams are still huge sellers and they hardly cater to the casual crowd.

Wait - so you are seriously trying to argue that people who buy Nintendo products actually know of E3? All those young families with 10 year old kids buying all those Wii fits and such? And even older couples...

Gamers don't really play the Wii (I bought one when it came out then sold it after the novelty wore off) - and only gamers know about E3..

and i'm sorry but that's as silly as earlier

I mean I get the point - you think it's for babies and not hardcore - but unfortunately that doesn't make it correct in the end

but there's too much written up about their conferences and games on adult or teenage-aged gamer sites, too much analysis made of it, and too much coverage from a network that really tries to market itself to hardcore gamers more than anything else, to say that they don't have a contingent of fans that know about and follow the show is just silly; they have as much of a "gamer" contingent as everyone else

Again, I get you think the system is just a cheap toy...and you might respond with that later (I'm probably not going to see it today and be able to respond; I'm off to swim laps, dinner, and movie for the rest of the day)

I guess I'm saying is you're stressing your opinions, and that's cool -- but that doesn't necessarily make it fact :good!:

So I guess all the ovations and cheering for Nintendo is just piped in.

And if what you say is true, that only "gamers" know of E3 and don't care about the Wii, then both Microsoft and Sony must both be really stupid since the majority of both of their presentations was content that is a result of trying to catch up to the Wii.

I want to see a tester do jumping-jacks during that and see what happens :p

Seriously - go ask the average teenager if they know what E3 is... if you really want to spice it up - ask a teenage girl who owns the Wii if they have any clue what E3 is or if they read video game reviews about E3 and up coming products.

Yes - people who are "gamers" play the Wii - but it's a small, small, small portion. The Wii got most of its sales through word of mouth basically... someone hosts a party.. breaks out the Wii.. they love it - go out and buy it..

How many gamers do you know that own the games like the Wii fit and dance games? Mario isn't really for the "hardcore" - my little cousin plays that on the Wii.. but obviously gamers who grew up on Mario and Zelda are going to purchase the Wii just for those games due to their loyalty and love of the title.. that's why I originally bought the Wii - to play the new Zelda.

You can keep proclaiming your opinion all you want, and keep playing the hypothetical game of going up and asking random teenagers, but the actual observable fact is that at E3, Nintendo gets a huge following. You say only gamers know of E3, so obviously it's gamers that are the ones that are cheering loudly at the Nintendo presentations. It's certainly not soccer moms and grandpas doing so.

And you may not believe Mario is for the "hardcore" but several million gamers would disgaree, as would pretty much every major gaming website/publication.

And this is coming from someone that is anything but a Wii apologist/fanboy. My Wii has been collecting dust for months and I think motion controls are probably the worst thing to come about this generation.

i didn't even know you had a wii

Mario has not and never will be considered hardcore. What is hardcore about Mario? I played it as a 10 year old - and my cousin plays it as a 10 year old. I'll still occasionally hop on an NES emulator or something and play it - but how does that make it hardcore? Lol.

And you realize that all the gaming nerds flock to E3 - aka the small, small, small portion of Wii owners that we would actually consider gamers, correct? Get real man.

I don't anymore - I sold it after I beat Zelda because I couldn't find any other games I could enjoy - and definitely wasn't going to fall into the money trap that Nintendo is with all their accessories. I guess I could maybe enjoy a racing game or Mario party on the Wii as well if I wanted to.

and btw - I'm in no way saying past Nintendo consoles are not made for and played by gamers - they were the standard for the gamer until the gamecube. I'm specifically speaking of the Wii.

Even the DS and such are much more for gamers than the Wii.

Well wise sage of video games...pray tell us all, what makes a game "hardcore" then? Guns? Blood?

Oh there's a small detail....you're wrong that it's not considered "hardcore". Again, if you'd like to disagree with the majority of the gaming community, be my guest.

Me get real? You are the one that keeps changing just exactly what E3 is. First you say only gamers show up and indicate that since Wii owners aren't "gamers" then Wii owners don't care. Then when I point out that every year Nintendo's conference gets tons of attention and reception, now you say E3 is only attended by geeks and the small minority of Wii owners that YOU consider gamers are there....

G4 was just railing on them for trying to step outside their boundaries. Nintendo is for little kids, or adults who play video games with their kids. The only time the Wii was ever god was when Shay Laren was playing with it, and that was 100 percent her, and 0 percent Wii.

How about this - is there a way to compare sales of the popular titles that are also on xbox360 and ps3 compared with the # of Wiis sold? Excluding the gimmicky Nintendo Wii games..

I don't think a gamer in their right mind would purchase a football game on the Wii over one on the xbox or playstation.

Well first of all, G4 likely has the lowest reputation of any proclaimed video game media....check out any gaming website and post about G4 and you'll quickly see how much gamers think of them.

Secondly, even with that, they still proclaimed Nintendo's conference as better than Sony's or Microsoft's.

And third, you named 1. I can name GameSpot, GameTrailers, IGN, Game Informer, EGM, 1Up, Kotaku, GamePro, and even lesser sites like ScrewAttack that all say Nintendo is the clear winner.

False - I've always said a very, very, very small portion of active Wii players I would consider gamers. And considering how many Wiis have sold - it is not hard to imagine that they could fill up E3.. not exactly that crazy of a concept.

I still don't see how you can consider MARIO hardcore, lol. What is your definition of hardcore? By saying it's appealing to everyone... it even appealed to my dad and I will not be surprised one bit if it appeals to one of his grandchildren makes it the opposite of hardcore, imo.

So everyone that plays Mario is hardcore? Since it's only for the hardcore? I guess I'm just not sure where you're coming from with that one.

Nintendo's conference has been popular well before the Wii; even during the GameCube years it had a huge following.

And I ask again, what is your definition of a hardcore game? You apparently can tell me what's NOT a hardcore game, but what IS one?

For the first paragraph - like I said earlier - Nintendo was the standard for gamers before the Wii pretty much - I preferred the PS2 over the gamecube - but that was still decent.. terrible controller kept me from playing it.

People grew up on Nintendo - they pretty much made video games what they are today - that's why they have such a large following. I lived for the NES, SNES, and N64.

I asked you the same question - but a game that appeals to the masses of all age ranges definitely is not in the definition of my hardcore type games.

To be honest - it's hard to define what a hardcore game is... but you certainly could say games like Read Dead, Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War type games are "hardcore". You won't find any teenage girls or 9-year-olds playing those.

If you want to consider some older games for older consoles I'd consider hardcore - then pretty much any rpg for the SNES such as: Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG, FF, etc. and not games like Mario Kart (although I loved that game).

I thought a game like Socom II for the ps2 would fall in the category of more "hardcore".

I guess it's up to your definition of it - but I do not consider any simple Mario game "hardcore".

So that's pretty much your definition....if no 9 year olds or teenage girls plays it, then it's "hardcore"?

The problem I have with the "hardcore" term is it doesn't fit. I don't consider hardly ANY current gen games "hardcore" because so many games are too easy and too short. Give me a game like Ninja Gaiden....both the old NES games AND the new games are what I consider hardcore.

I use the term "core" mostly...and by that I mean games that don't have some gimmick. Which yes, that rules out a lot of Wii titles but it also rules out Guitar Hero and Rock Band. That's why I do put Mario and Zelda games in the same "core" category as I do God of War and Halo.

That's certainly part of it - with a few exceptions - there are certainly kids that young who are future gamers that are already playing hardcore titles at a young age - like many of us who post in here.

I'd also rule out 99% of games that have a cartoon or TV show made after it or if the game is based on it hardcore.

I don't think Halo is hardcore - but would consider God of War more hardcore than Halo.

That's just it with Nintendo's first party stuff at least. It appeals to most everyone. Most of the games Nintendo showed this E3 targeted your core gamer/hardcore crowd. I would classify the platformers they showed as games aimed at your hardcore gamer. Especially when you factor in the name/brands(Metroid, Donkey Kong, Goldeneye, Kirby, etc). Now your fitness games, puzzle games, party games, and rhythm games I wouldn't call "hardcore" games.
