I'm never really certain why talking about one player so often needs to be at the expense of another but there seems little logical reason to pointing out that Sampson having a very good season that needs to unhappen the season Jeanty had last year. Nobody, nobody, up to and including Jeanty's own family, believes he played a schedule that compares directly with other P4 backs. That doesn't unhappen that he'd have still led the nation in rushing if you only counted yards after contact. (that's probably worth reading twice)
It's fair to consider the competition level but it's not all encompassing because it's not just about yards. In '22 the nations top 3 (3!) leading rushers weren't in the running for any major awards. The reason is exactly what those citing the competition level argue. It didn't work on Jeanty because his production level was way above the grading curve even with the competition level considered. It wasn't just yards and tds either as the tape agreed with the other assessments. If that weren't the case the NFL wouldn't have thought so much of him since in the final analysis they're trying to get the best player available for their position and college production box scores only tell part of the story and they are fully aware of that being the case.
Some people have also tried to dunk on Jeanty because of the PSt game. The box score alone might lean that way but no other portion of the observation does. Many would argue Boise shouldn't even have been in the playoffs in the first place. Outside of Jeanty what other P4 players are even on their roster? PSt had a massive talent advantage on the lines so despite Jeanty having something silly, like a .6 yards before contact average per rush for the game, he still had something like 19 broken tackles. (this from memory per PFF) They sold out on stopping Jeanty to the point their QB broke 300y passing for only the 2nd time all season, the only other time being San Diego St. One play famously had Jeanty splitting out to the right and you say PSt shift 3, yes 3, players out with him just on his motion.
Jeanty had a historic college football season a year ago and we'll all wait and see what he does at the next level which is it's own story and completely separate from what Sampson will/won't do after having his own very nice college season.
