Thanks for the summation - well stated. It sounds like White was prepared for the press conference and organized with his thoughts. What is wrong with some of you people? I just watched DW's press conference and saw nothing whatsoever that should be viewed as a negative, and I certainly didn't hear him whining about anything. I'm not sure what some of you are looking for. I also think many of you place too much faith in the rumor mill of false information that's been floating around for the past week or so.
First and foremost, CTV doesn't owe us anything. We should be grateful to have had him for the period he has been here and for the level of success to which he has pushed the program. I get it that some of you are butthurt that "he's leaving us" but get over yourselves. While we can be disappointed that he's leaving, how proud should we be that he is doing it because his success has granted him the opportunity to do something THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! Let me repeat that - he is doing something THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! What we should all be doing is wishing him luck in this new endeavor because it is almost certain to be a daunting task.
I also listened to what DW said about the financial issues and I didn't hear anything negative there. In fact he said that all 34 roster spots (the limit under the new NCAA guidelines) for the baseball team have full scholarships tied to them. That's considerably different than the 11.7 scholarships they had to divide up among the players prior to the new changes. He also totally shot down the rumor that money was being taken from the baseball program and diverted to the women's programs. The percentages by which the funds have been split up among the programs have been set for some time; the revenue sharing just formalizes part of the process. He said the UT baseball program was as well funded as any college baseball program in the country. Money was never an issue in any of this. This was all about a once-in-a-lifetime, first-time ever, opportunity for CTV because of his success at UT.
As for the "communication" issues some of you deem to have been a problem, DW said Tony had kept him informed throughout the process over the past two weeks, so DW and his staff had been preparing for the possibility that Tony would take the SF job. He talked about naming Frank as the interim acting head coach because the players needed to know who was in charge during this transition, and also because Frank had head coaching experience. He said Josh Elander can focus on preparing his application for the job while continuing to perform his other assigned tasks. He laid out plans for keeping the players informed about the process, and for the coaching search under such unusual circumstances.
While I'm disappointed to lose Tony, I think the program is in a good place to "weather the storm" so many of you seem to think is heading our way. Whatever happens, GBO!!!
No, Because it will probably take 2 to 3 years to make them top ten. He might have a good two or three year run but other teams will use his age against him. Then he loses recruits and retires but you had a great 3 year run. Not worth it for a big name school. You don’t think Penn State, Florida, any other open job would jump to hire Cignetti?
I didn’t hear the press conference but What do you want White to say or differently? Coach was compensated for his success. The stadium renovations are under way.
CTV considered taking a MLB mgr position, not another college job. Money had nothing to do with him leaving so White talking to coach five times a day wouldn’t change anything.
Yes and the entire mismanagement of LNS upgrades, and the other venues Neyland, TBA, etc. are wearing thin!!! We were already thinking of dropping season tix for football after this season or next. All he cares about is the wine and cheese crowd, he's pricing the average fan out. He also moves the student section way down the right field line in baseball. He's not as good as I and many others thought

I love my school, I love our people, I love our passion, but the time is quickly approaching to seriously consider walking away from all of it!!! The greed and constant belittling of fans is unacceptable to me! THE FANS that are THE ONE and ONLY reason that sports (any league or level) have they money they do! So ungrateful!
We deserve better!!!
AgreeI don’t care about what he said, but I sure as hell care about him talking to TV once the last five days. There should’ve been multiple calls with “what can we do to keep you?” as the primary topic.
You give everything you’ve got to keep a great coach and ambassador for the university. If that doesn’t keep him around in the end then you’ve still put up the good fight.
I mean when people are spreading baseless rumors about her program then yeah those people probably do owe her an apology. Anyone who thinks that Tony left for the big leagues because some 20 year olds that play one sport got more money than some other sport are out of their minds. And don’t forget the bizarre statement about “Kim Caldwell deserves an apology” to the question about the money going away from baseball to WBB. It was the biggest tell in my opinion that he’s insecure when getting called out or put on the spot over anything he does.
because national championships are famously won in the press briefing room answering the questions of the mouth breathers and dunces that make up the majority of the sports beat in KnoxvilleWhich minion on the staff directory are you?
Tell your boss he needs to take public speaking courses. My high schooler has a better command of a room.
Because none of the journalists here want to lose access (of course, the access those journalists have never scoops a big story, that’s always national guys telling us about Nico, Tony V, etc), so they don’t ask tough questions. Frankly it is unbelievable and absolutely inexcusable that he’d only talk to Tony once since the news got out. He should have been grilled about that. The fact he wasn’t is malpractice and should put the “local media hates UT” crowd out to pasture. Why did nobody ask Danny White about what he was willing to offer Tony Vitello to stay? Or how those pitches were going. If he would’ve spoken to how he tried everything possible to keep him, Vols fans could put that to rest.
Which is hilarious because none of them break the big stories anyway. The access they get is invariably “such and such is looking stronger and more athletic in fall camp” or “Tennessee likes where they’re at with this recruit.” Qb transfers, championship coach leaves, brand new coach jets off to LA, star player has cancer, legendary coach has Alzheimer’s, all that gets broken by national guys.If you don’t toe the company line you’ll lose access.
You saw nothing wrong with it because you take him at his word. What is wrong with some of you people? I get that the man is in a tough spot with a lot of stakeholders. No matter how often people want to say "it's business", at the end of the day these teams are still representing a state institution that means a whole lot to a whole lot of people.
DW is making no effort to listen to the mass of stakeholders. He's running the same path that venture capitalists always end up doing, which is pennypinching his market and eventually killing it.
