DW press conference

I finally got around to watching ADDW press conference. I didn’t really hear anything surprising. CTV has pushed boundaries the whole time here, this is just another. I don’t get the impression there was something White could have done, but could be totally wrong.

I always go back to the plane ride home from the natty in 98 when reportedly, Mrs. Fulmer told Mr. Fulmer, “there’s no place to go now but down.” I don’t know if it’s true or folklore.

Maybe CTV didn’t need to be told and he’s still young enough to climb a different mountain. Who really knows?

baseball is when I would get most excited about a season starting bc we have (had) a legit shot at winning the NC every year. But now, depending on who the hire is, I am just in the I will not renew my ESPN subscription and not worry about watching anymore, just back to the "check the boxscore and see how we did" mood.
I'm going back into the Delmonico mode. When it's the contract year, we might do something.

I think this is the wrong read. Looks good and pithy in print, but in the real world...

You make your best pitch, your best counter offer, make all your points for staying and answer all his questions--all at the same time. One meeting. After that, you treat a man like a man and leave him alone to come to his own decision.

Does anyone here really think Tony V was gonna be nagged into staying? Harassed into staying? In every way, Tony V was at the top of the college baseball world. What was left to make him "more top?"

Tony did what we've always loved about him. He went with his gut. And like he always says, maybe it'll turn out for good, maybe it won't.

There's no reason to blame Tony--nor any reason to blame Danny (without believing things that no one KNOWS to be true--and of which no one would know both sides). Because there's always two sides.

Just blame reality. We're fans. We control nothing. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and inevitably they will get stomped on! We lose games... we lose recruits... we lose players to injuries... we lose players to the portal... we lose players to poor off-field decisions... and we lose coaches. That's the reality of being a sports fan. Either blame reality, or blame ourselves for choosing to invest our time, money, and emotions in a pastime that is going to hurt us every time, tomorrow if not today.

As Robert Mitchum said in "Out of the Past"... That's no way to win.
Femme fatale: Is there a way to win?
Mitchum: Well, there's a way to lose more slowly.

Things sure did change from building Vitello a stadium. Over nil allotment? Whatever. I don’t even know if DW has anything to do with that. Does spyrr answer to the AD?
Not sure how that works nowadays. But I do know Spyre supported, and will continue to support, TN baseball. Every coach @ every program wants more money.

What is wrong with some of you people? I just watched DW's press conference and saw nothing whatsoever that should be viewed as a negative, and I certainly didn't hear him whining about anything. I'm not sure what some of you are looking for. I also think many of you place too much faith in the rumor mill of false information that's been floating around for the past week or so.

First and foremost, CTV doesn't owe us anything. We should be grateful to have had him for the period he has been here and for the level of success to which he has pushed the program. I get it that some of you are butthurt that "he's leaving us" but get over yourselves. While we can be disappointed that he's leaving, how proud should we be that he is doing it because his success has granted him the opportunity to do something THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! Let me repeat that - he is doing something THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! What we should all be doing is wishing him luck in this new endeavor because it is almost certain to be a daunting task.

I also listened to what DW said about the financial issues and I didn't hear anything negative there. In fact he said that all 34 roster spots (the limit under the new NCAA guidelines) for the baseball team have full scholarships tied to them. That's considerably different than the 11.7 scholarships they had to divide up among the players prior to the new changes. He also totally shot down the rumor that money was being taken from the baseball program and diverted to the women's programs. The percentages by which the funds have been split up among the programs have been set for some time; the revenue sharing just formalizes part of the process. He said the UT baseball program was as well funded as any college baseball program in the country. Money was never an issue in any of this. This was all about a once-in-a-lifetime, first-time ever, opportunity for CTV because of his success at UT.

As for the "communication" issues some of you deem to have been a problem, DW said Tony had kept him informed throughout the process over the past two weeks, so DW and his staff had been preparing for the possibility that Tony would take the SF job. He talked about naming Frank as the interim acting head coach because the players needed to know who was in charge during this transition, and also because Frank had head coaching experience. He said Josh Elander can focus on preparing his application for the job while continuing to perform his other assigned tasks. He laid out plans for keeping the players informed about the process, and for the coaching search under such unusual circumstances.

While I'm disappointed to lose Tony, I think the program is in a good place to "weather the storm" so many of you seem to think is heading our way. Whatever happens, GBO!!!

I met Fulmer in Columbia, TN at a charity event. He confirmed his wife made that statement and even suggested Phil retire. Her concern was the stress of the job knowing fans and the TN admin would expect continuous success.

She truly wanted him to consider retiring 2001 and 2002 seasons.

I didn’t listen or watch the press conference. Maybe TV has always had a dream to manage in MLB. TV could have left every year for another college job, DW kept him a few extra years with salary and upgrades to stadium. I’m not taking any side because I don’t have a clue what happened behind the scenes. The only thing I know is I’m sick over him leaving but wish him the best of luck.

The negative is he didn't try to convince him to stay!

Where do we start...

1) The first 2 - 3 minutes should have been a tribute to Tony. It was lackluster and immediately went into the money stuff--budget, facilities.
2) Took credit for recruiting
3) Admitted he rarely communicated with his coaches. wtf...
And don’t forget the bizarre statement about “Kim Caldwell deserves an apology” to the question about the money going away from baseball to WBB. It was the biggest tell in my opinion that he’s insecure when getting called out or put on the spot over anything he does.

It’s not NIL, what Tony Basilio is talking about is rev share. I don’t have anything against Basilio but he doesn’t seem like a smart enough dude to know the difference. And it kinda F’d us cause now Danny white can say “that was a lie” cause it is a lie about NIL. Also I don’t know if the rev share got taken from the baseball team. In all likelihood Tony V just didn’t get as much as he was expecting. Like he should have expected since he’s the only one who’s done anything over there (sorry Barnes you’ve done a whole lot but this isn’t about you rn)

Why did nobody ask Danny White about what he was willing to offer Tony Vitello to stay? Or how those pitches were going. If he would’ve spoken to how he tried everything possible to keep him, Vols fans could put that to rest.
I’m speculating and could be wrong but maybe both parties agreed not to discuss specifics.
