DW press conference

What exactly was wrong with this press conference? It sounds like he said and did all the right things.

People need to stop looking for a fire when there ain’t even any smoke.

Where do we start...

1) The first 2 - 3 minutes should have been a tribute to Tony. It was lackluster and immediately went into the money stuff--budget, facilities.
2) Took credit for recruiting
3) Admitted he rarely communicated with his coaches. wtf...

My IQ has landed me in some pretty cool places. I've seen enough power brokers to know an ******* when I see and that guy is a narcissistic POS.

Hes the reason person people leave strong stable jobs.
Totally agree. I’ve worked for a variety of managers. The best kind you are able to develop a good working relationship through interaction. You don’t interact with a guy, how do you develop any kind of relationship with him?

1) He congratulated Tony like 4 times in the press conference…called it historic achievement and a great reflection of everything TV has done at Tennessee. He was also pushing back on false rumors about the admin’s committment to baseball and relationship with Tony, most of which were promulgated on this site.

2) Talking about facilities and budget is just emphasizing that Tony has left us in a strong position and one of the premier jobs in the country.

3) This is not unusual in big organizations to have a chain of command especially in higher ed. Do you want Danny to be micromanaging our coaches? Given all the unfounded criticism of him here, you’d certainly be forgiven for thinking so.

Yall clearly don’t understand any of the roles of the people involved if you think the director of athletics, a college administrator, has any role in managing assistant coaches. That was literally Tony’s job.

Where did I allude to assistants? DW wasn’t talking to TV, his most popular and successful coach on campus.

Which minion on the staff directory are you?

Tell your boss he needs to take public speaking courses. My high schooler has a better command of a room.

DW sucks. He has zero relationship with his coaches. Indiana AD meets with his coaches weekly and you know who is staying at Indiana and not taking another job?

I mean, sure. But….

1. You have a national champion coach.

2. He considers leaving.

3. You talk to him once in 5 days.

Justify it. We’ll wait…..

No, we are upset that he only talked to the best coach in Knoxville 1 time in the last 5 days. Pitiful!
I think this is the wrong read. Looks good and pithy in print, but in the real world...

You make your best pitch, your best counter offer, make all your points for staying and answer all his questions--all at the same time. One meeting. After that, you treat a man like a man and leave him alone to come to his own decision.

Does anyone here really think Tony V was gonna be nagged into staying? Harassed into staying? In every way, Tony V was at the top of the college baseball world. What was left to make him "more top?"

Tony did what we've always loved about him. He went with his gut. And like he always says, maybe it'll turn out for good, maybe it won't.

There's no reason to blame Tony--nor any reason to blame Danny (without believing things that no one KNOWS to be true--and of which no one would know both sides). Because there's always two sides.

Just blame reality. We're fans. We control nothing. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and inevitably they will get stomped on! We lose games... we lose recruits... we lose players to injuries... we lose players to the portal... we lose players to poor off-field decisions... and we lose coaches. That's the reality of being a sports fan. Either blame reality, or blame ourselves for choosing to invest our time, money, and emotions in a pastime that is going to hurt us every time, tomorrow if not today.

As Robert Mitchum said in "Out of the Past"... That's no way to win.
Femme fatale: Is there a way to win?
Mitchum: Well, there's a way to lose more slowly.

And then we go with more name calling instead of having a rational conversation. 🤦

Exactly. Tony is a strong-willed individual. And those who know Danny say the same about him. I’m sure they butted heads and disagreed on certain topics. But Danny White supports baseball and I know for a fact Spyre supports baseball with NIL.

I don’t have any info regarding how much $$$ from revenue is being shared w/ TN baseball, but I will let White and AD dept make that decision. White isn’t going to spend millions on stadium renovations w/o making sure the staff is competitive with recruiting dollars/NIL.

Coach TV left TN for an opportunity of a lifetime. He will be the first ever collegiate coach to manage a MLB team - history in the making.

she’s been here for a year. GIVE HER TIME.

The key point is that right now at this point she has not won a national championship at Tennessee.

I think she is going to have to change her style of coaching to win a national championship. The elite teams, that she must beat consistently, will adjust and figure out how to counter act with the style.

Basketball is one sport where in-game adjustments are the most critical to make. She just doesn't adjust at all.

baseball is when I would get most excited about a season starting bc we have (had) a legit shot at winning the NC every year. But now, depending on who the hire is, I am just in the I will not renew my ESPN subscription and not worry about watching anymore, just back to the "check the boxscore and see how we did" mood.
