I have started to lose my mind a little bit watching UT basketball over the past 2.5 seasons. I can't figure out which end is up.
I will say that I wrote the post for a couple of reasons, the first being to point out that are very few coaches that are actually "available" to UT that would be either considered "sure things" or "on-the-verge". Forde's list and my own personal list for that article would be different, but it does make you think a little.
The second reason I wrote it is b/c everytime we have a coaching search people talk about "dropping a dumptruck full of money at XYZ coach's house". The truth of that is even a dumptruck full of money will not make the majority of proven coaches come to UT.
Once you remove those coaches from the scenario the list becomes much smaller and still would require UT to spend 2 mil plus for a coach. Really there are 2 lists. The Major school coach who has proven something (at least 1 of recruiting prowess, winning with minimal talent, great motivator, Xs and Os, etc) but has not gotten over the hump (elite 8s and Final Fours) or the Mid-Major bargain basement cross-your-fingers and hope they are ready coaches.
List 1
Buzz Williams (not on Forde's but should be)
Jamie Dixon
Scott Drew
Ben Howland
Tony Bennett
List 2
The next mid-major coach to make a run in the NCAA this year.
I would take any of the other names on list 1 over Drew, but I would take Drew over any options from list 2. Of course I would also take Pearl back. I really like winning.
