Love the confidence of our players. Especially Drew Richmond. Unlike a certain someone, they're not afraid to say their goal is to win it all.

Kudos to Coach Butch Jones and staff for instilling this winning mentality and attitude!! The players didn't get this way without the leadership of our staff!!

Good to hear I guess but player speak is about like coach speak. I mean what else are they going to say?

I would prefer the goal being east champions then see what happens. Would seem more believable from where we ended up last season.

Sometimes you really do put your lack of experience as a competitor on full display. There is not one player or coach on the hill that doesn't have a National Championship as the goal. That goal however is predicated by reaching several goals that will build to it. This is why most players and coaches will focus and speak more the more immediate goals that have to be reached daily in order to accomplish the ultimate goal. Quit bashing Butch because he wants to keep the team focused on the smaller goals that must be reached that lead to a Natty.

True. It's like he would prefer Jones just come out and tell the team they're going to win the NC no matter what rather than work with them step by step on the small things that make that goal a reality. These players have spent their whole lives winning football games. Confidence is not the issue. Focus is.

Maybe the players actually have confidence that they can win an National Championship with this years squad? Just because the players and the staff say something positive about the program, doesn't mean it's always "coach or player speak".

I like the way CBJ controls the program. When interviewed the players don't say goofy stuff to fire up opposing teams like Jalen "Teez" Tabor. Coach/Player speak is better than seeing our coaches and players trash talk and say stuff that makes headlines for the enemies newspapers. It's also a life lesson for the players about self control and common sense.

I actually agree with this. I've been watching TN Football for about 5 decades now. There was a point about midways through my experience that I learned if players were talking about winning it all in July/August I might as well prepare myself for a disappointing season. The only time in that span where we won it all was the year most least expected. Although in this case my "tell" has always been the QB so as long as JD stays focused on winning every play - maybe we still have a shot. :)

P.S. When I say disappointing - I mean disappointed like losing to Memphis or someone like that. To win it all takes a bit of magic or luck or something like that. Attitude is important but in a champion humility is preferred over pride with one exception - and he was the "GREATEST OF ALL TIME!". :hi:

I'm glad Butch has our guys focused. One game at a time and the rest will take care of itself

So you're saying when Team 120 goes out and competes, their goals shouldn't be to achieve at the highest level? As a fan, I'm not expecting 15-0, but I'd absolutely want the team to BELIEVE they can do it and work to achieve it. Team 120 wants to be great, not good. Not 10-2, SEC East Champs. 15-0, 2016 SEC and National champions. Sad that you'd want them to lower their expectations.

No one is saying to lower expectations. It's called keeping the team focused. Why do you think coaches instill in their players the "I'm focusing on the next game" mentality. Staying focused on the current task is the key to long term success.

Oh, I totally understand that. Focus on the now, control the controllables and all that. But there's a difference in saying "we are going to win a national championship" and "our goal is to win a national championship". That's all I'm saying. Therefore, when someone says the goal should be SEC East champs, I don't agree.

Agreed, I like the fact that this teams goal is a NC. To me, this is Tennessee football, and the belief that we are as good as any other team out there.

There's a difference in defining success and having goals, to me. Success for this team is winning the East (and in doing so, winning 10 games and going to the wire in the SECCG) but the goal is ALWAYS win the national title. If you settle for less than the best, you will hit it every time.
