Doug Matthews Roasting the AD hiring process

Given how freely the allegations about Majors flowed, I have a hard time believing that similar rumors about Blackburn wouldn't have been plastered front and center. Maybe some of you heard things through your respective grapevines but I never noticed the rumor until days after Currie was hired.

Yeah , this is still after the fact. She made it clear from the beginning? Where? When? To who? Just hubs?

No Jake. Again, she said this during Currie's introduction ceremony/event.....

"And from the beginning, people asked me what I was looking for. And those of you that have heard me, know that I have stood fast about that. I continued to say, I wanted a sitting AD at a Power Five school."

Hyams, Hubbs, Mathews and others had been saying it for weeks prior her officially beginning her position on Feb 15 and she makes mention of it here. With all due respect, just because you didn't hear/read about it, doesn't mean she didn't say it/it wasn't reported and that others of us didn't hear/read it, because I absolutely did. You're splitting hairs at this point.

I'm with you on that. It shouldn't be.

Has anyone considered that by hiring a fund raiser for an AD, that's it's an attempt to get away from the current booster in controllers with the expectation of setting up some other group of big $ boosters that have winning higher on the list than pumping their ego?

That would be nice but I dont think we have people in place smart enough to to even think of something like that!

Yeah, look where that (Mike Hamilton) got us!

It's not about the AD, it's about having boosters willing to write the check when it's time for a change even if the change is which booster is calling the shots because of the $ that is in play. $ has to work for us not against us.

The problem is the same booster has made every big decision since Dickey retired.

Only Pearl was a homerun.

It makes me wonder if Currie can come up with a group of new donors or get a group of current donors to commit to cover the "check" when we go against current leadership.

That's fine but in everything I've found said by her publicly I've not read or heard her say "has to be a sitting P5 AD"....if she did great.

I just can't find it.

Doubt it. Many of the other boosters he could go to wanted to hire someone else according to the accounts that have been aired in this thread. Currie has visible puppet strings.

No worries. Just saying that not only have I heard it reported since January, by multiple people, but she acknowledged it in her opening comments at Currie's introduction ceremony. It was real.

Not easy finding annual 6 and 7 figure donors, they don't grow on trees. That Haslam money ain't going anywhere whilst it gets its way, which it just did.

I doubt if anybody's dream job is being a puppet, even if the job is at their favorite place.

The Boosters that didn't get what they wanted would be the target audience. There are two ways to increase donations, the same Boosters giving more or gifts from new Boosters.

You're right. When talking millions to a billionaire, I guess it would be hard to keep him in check. It's not about what he has donated, it's about what he will or even what he could donate.

oh, i've seen and heard people reporting it...now. and i heard her say it as, and since, he was introduced.

i just find int interesting that it is being reported that's they way it was from the jump, so why all the fuss, when i can't seem to find a video link, article, editorial--nothing--with it being her words saying it had to be a sitting p5 AD.

maybe in a fireside chat with hubbs and whoever else she did say it to? don't know.

but i still contend that had there been some public statement on Feb 15th, when she had her "day 1".....and said "sitting P5 AD", would there have been a reason to bring Fulmer and Blackburn to NY in the first place, even if only for courtesy interviews??? if it was such an emphatic statement, why then, still was the hub bub going on about Blackburn and Fulmer, since she took the office?

KB, she may very well have said it. but if she did, she didn't say it loud enough, for sure. and i still can't find anything before he was hired where it was said to be a pre requisite for this job.

Why the hub bub? Pretty obvious no?

To placate the fan base because one or the other of Blackburn and Fulmer was who it wanted. So you keep those two involved in the process, supposedly give them the opportunity to compete for the position, but lo and behold, there were just other, better candidates....but they guys you wanted, Blackburn mainly and even Fulmer for some, they got their shots, were given the opportunities, just weren't as good as the other candidates, had to go in a different direction, we did our due diligence Vol fans .....but he's a "Tennessee guy", so sit down, shut and be happy. Imho, that was pretty much the message.

As far as Davenport giving her qualifications for the position, I don't know what else to tell you Jake. I've quoted both Hubbs and Hyams referencing it and I've given Davenport's own quote at the Currie "introduction ceremony" where she makes it clear "a currently sitting AD at a P5 school" was her baseline, and she had previously made that known (to guys like Hubbs and Hyams at a minimum). I guess I could go back into Doug Mathews' Big Orange Sunday Show archives and see when he first made mention of it.....I'm guessing it was mid to late January, but I know this....I heard it so often from so many different sources that, as I said last week, I just assumed it was common knowledge.

if that baseline were true, paragraph 2, why the need for paragraph 1? you think it's placating the fans to do ceremony interviews? only to hire someone else completely out of left field? how's that plan worked out with the placation of the fan base? you think they really care about that? i don't.

no, i think she got the message, haslam made the call--definitely no Fulmer, and if Blackburn is going to bring in Fulmer, then no Blackburn either--and afterward, it's time to justify "the process".

KB, i know you're listening to those guys, and they're saying what they're saying, so i'm not doubting the information you're talking about. i'm not really even questioning if she said it in some context to one or any of those individuals.

but it's just not out there, anywhere, that i've seen or read that she's ever discussed that as part of the AD search that he/she "had to be a sitting P5 AD". and there were many opportunities for her to state that, if it was such a high priority on her list of qualifications.

Also considering where the whole fulmer/blackburn thing had gotten publicly, why would you want that to continue on, if you have the ability to quell it, that easily? shout it from the mountain tops. announce who's in charge, who's making the decision...not the fans, not the booster... ME, and this is my criteria for that job.

There's no way in hell that sitting P5 AD was a prerequisite because they had no way to know that they'd be able to find such a person outside of a perhaps some real bottom feeder P5 schools, unless it was all set up for Currie from the jump and the powers that be decided it would be good for a chuckle to take the fanbase, Fulmer and Blackburn on a little goose chase. Not buying it.

Great, so she's a liar.
That's just awesome.

Well that's not what I'm saying, necessarily.

She probably did say it. In some context. To someone.

But it wasn't a prevailing theme she proclaimed in any of her communication regarding the search, until after he was hired. so I do question the level of priority this really was... until you know who had their say.

Often times leaders will give the plan once with the expectation people will listen. The ole E.F. Hutton line.

On a side note, I sat with Tom Hutton at a home game, rode the elevator to the seats. That's how you watch football.

2017 is looking good.

Agreed. There's nothing positive to come from letting the fulmer/Blackburn deal fester, if being a sitting P5 ad was the prevailing qualifier. Siap, but you say it from day 1 loud and clear and let everyone know who's running things.
