Doug Matthews on the OC

Not so sure. If this was the plan, just do it about 5 weeks ago. There are 3 points coming up over the next month, in case we want to keep looking at more folks.

1. NC game tomorrow, in case we want someone coaching in that game.
2. Coaches convention in San Antonio, where you can interview a lot of coaches during the recruitong dead period.
3. NFL playoffs
I don't think it was the plan. I think the plan was to hire Freeze and when that was overruled, then Yurcich but that also fell through with the OSU opening. Based on what CJP has stated, it will be someone he is comfortable with and who shares his vision of how the offensive side of the ball fits into his plan. If it is an outside hire, they would have to be willing to work with the existing staff verses bring their own guys. Another hurdle to overcome, so again I think the new OC will be from an existing staff member or members. JMHO.

People in the UT athletic department keep secrets better than the NSA and CIA

The organization that really keeps good secrets is the one whose initials none of us know yet.

That was the NSA...40 years ago. Today, it's the one you don't know anything about. :)

Reminds me of how the Delta/Ranger task force always has some innocuous name, like TF 120, and changes it the minute anyone in the media finds out who they really are.

...

UT AD is doing fine, appreciate a gator fan jumping in to talk about their strengths.

He never said he talked to Fulmer, everyone just assumed he did because "they are BFF".

Maybe he knew that's what everyone would think so he took a gamble. And lost?

Since we're all just speculating.
Listen to the podcast because I think he said that was info Fulmer gave..

Doug never said he knew a name. Said he does not ask so he will not have to lie about when he is asked. The deal may still be done but can not be announced because there is still 1 collage game and a few pro games to be played. I still lean that is Chaney but their season is over. Could be the QB coach from Clemson. There is also a pretty good OC sitting the office down the hall if we need him. Also the national coaches conference is this week. Maybe waiting till after awards are announced to make our announcement.

Fans were getting restless over the OC hire so possibly Fulmer told Matthews it was 95% locked up so DM would share that info on air and calm the masses. Basilio said it wasn’t even close to being over. The superfans all believed DM and the negaVols didn’t. We now know who was right.

Either way Tennessee is still sh1t at public relations and needs to do a better job with their narratives. The UTAD simply needed to release a statement saying “We’re interviewing many top candidates and will have a guy by NSD”. Then folks aren’t asking why it’s taking so long for that final 5%.
I agree. The public relations people at UT are TERRIBLE. Who ever is in charge of that needs to be re evaluated. Get someone with some brains to run that department. I get that rumors will come and go, but the University should at least put out a statement.

Same lesson not being learned by the same people. Why do people feel the need to pass “inside info”? Are any of the talking heads a surrogate for the Athletic Department floating ideas to gauge fan reaction? I doubt it. The reality is the (in this case D Matthews) spoke out of school and whomever told him the info should be concerned. They are (unintentionally I’m sure) teaming up to make the administration look like a bunch of incompetents. Just shut up and let the people getting paid to hire coaches do their job. When the decision is made, they will tell you. Everyone else who passes uncoraberated inaccurate information deserves the hate they get. Grow up.

Did CJP interview Freeze without PF knowing it? Seems that way, because if they were communicating PF would have said NO initially. Looks bad on Fulmer to not know what your main guy is doing, or even worse, saying no way after CJP does the interview. Ironic that the Communication Building is few feet away from PF.

Matthews’ source is Fulmer.

DM is a great guy who knows way more than just about any person on Volnation. He has integrity and doesn’t throw out stuff to see what sticks.

I’m sorry, but didn’t him saying it was “95% done” on the radio just prove he threw something out there to see if it sticks?

Jimmy's take
I think Pruitt was ready to hire an offensive coordinator in mid-December after interviewing Kendal Briles, Mike Yurcich and Hugh Freeze.
I think Pruitt prodded Briles for offensive ideas but didn’t offer. Briles has since been hired as Florida State’s offensive coordinator.
I think Pruitt wanted to hire Yurcich because Yurcich did more with less for six years as Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator. But Yurcich held out for the Ohio State OC job – which he got.

and

think Chaney is hirable. I didn’t think that in December. I think it now. But Pruitt might have to move relatively fast or Chaney might lose interest.

Chaney enjoyed his time at Tennessee (2009-12) and would probably like to retire in East Tennessee.

One long-time college coach with SEC experience told me Fulmer likes Chaney and Pruitt respects Chaney. How could you not, after what he did at Purdue with Drew Brees and at Tennessee with Tyler Bray and at Arkansas with Brandon Allen and Pitt with Nathan Peterman and Georgia with Jake Fromm.

Hard to believe noone wants the fracking job. Hire a Cylon.
I think some want it, but could be the one's we want also want to bring their OL coach with them. If the shocking narrative of Chaney coming back is a real rumor, Pruitt needs to find a way to get this done. Let Friend coach TE's.

He just doesn't typically do that. I think he truly believed they were close to getting a coordinator and either he had bad into our something changed.

Someone fed Doug some bull last month and he went with it. Poor reporting on his part. I think we can be confident who his source is and he is on his second box of donuts. This is very bad news. Get ready for a nobody hire.View attachment 187405
What a stupid comment. Have you ever eaten a doughnut. What a stooge. 151-51

I think so.
The link with actual quotes (I posted above), he only said the 95% thing about TN deciding on who they wanted. Usually, that's not mentioned unless that person verbally 'would accept' a formal offer.

I don't even listen to Doug but did use the link because the topic interested me. Cant speak for his normal behavior but what he said that day was not the context VN has spread since.
