Doug Matthews just reiterated...

Most of recruiting is about relationships. You're just not going to sway hardly any recruits with an OC hire late in the recruiting season. Possibly if someone is on the fence it might put them over but it's almost zero impact. There is almost no advantage to a quick hire except for possibly losing out to another school hiring them.

Yea, but what about appeasing message board people?!?!?

Someone stated this earlier and I think it should be reiterated....

Why in the hell is Pruitt out inteviewing coaches if he “already has his man” with the early signing period a week away??! That makes zero sense whatsoever...considering he’s the one that harped on recruiting better players all year.

In what world does pointless interviewing trump recruiting? Doug Matthews is spewing nonsense

It's simple, it's not publicly announced because the contract isn't signed/finalized.

And speculation grows because of two main reasons
1. VolNation is a huge source of clickbait, media outlets prey on that
2. Current staff & AD don't release information until it's certain

And if the contract hasn't been signed, he doesn't have his man yet.

They're interviewing just to get information? Wouldn't a simple phone call suffice for that? Conducting interviews for something like that seems like a waste of time and resources. Why would they do that?
Would you hire someone with just having a phone conversation with them? I would hope not!

Dec 16 is the quiet period and Dec 17 - Jan 10 is a dead period. So, too late to worry about that angle.

If you get the guy you want, waiting until January to announce him is ok....(assuming he is currently coaching a bowl / playoff somewhere).

According to the OP Matthews is saying they already know who the OC is and are now just interviewing for "information" sake. If they are still trying to hire someone it would make sense to have a sit down. But the claim is that's not why they are doing it, which makes little sense.

Um......is it just me, or would having a solid OC in place do wonders for recruiting??
They've got no one!

We are playing Jedi mind games with our enemies. We want them to think that we don’t know what we are doing. But, how will the react when they see Will Friend on the sidelines calling a handoff over left guard? Scared and confused

Exactly. If he's actually choosing to play Coffee with Coaches instead of recruiting, it's not gonna matter who he hires.

The re-incarnation of Bill Walsh could be next OC and some would be pissed off on VN.

IF UT is still "talking to people" it means:

1. They arent 100% convinced the guy we want is coming to UT and we need a plan D
2. They've been rejected by everyone like what happens every time we look for a head coach

I agree with number one. Number two, I have a feeling no offer was made to briles, Oklahoma State guy, or Freeze. In other words I don't believe they received an offer to reject. Of course this is just my opinion.

You always interview in person if possible. Most of communication isn't verbal. You get a lot better idea of what kind of person someone is face to face. You can still be fooled but it's not as easy to BS someone face to face.

Also, Head Coaches are not allowed to network or meet with OCs and other coaches to pick their brains and talk football because it gives the appearance of being interviewed and that causes people to start texting rumors which causes other people to get excited or mad about a process they have NO CLUE about but they tell the coach he BETTER not mess this up.

Glancing briefly at the track record and success of the UTAD in hiring for the football program in the last eleven years, the likelihood of us landing a generational coach with this hire are right on par with the state of Tennessee breaking off from the rest of the continent and floating out to sea.

Depends on how much the OC recruits.
Sometimes it means a lot, other times, almost nothing.
We've got an impressive list of visitors coming in this weekend, some just added last minute surprises. They seem ok with it.
