Dormady v. Guarantano

FWIW, both Dormady and Guarantano can succeed in Jones' system... or else Jones is wrong about his system. He has said he looks for leadership and command of the O first. Second iirc is being able to distribute the ball to play makers. In that sense, Dobbs isn't ideal while a better passer would be much closer even if they can't run as well.

Oh, did anyone else enjoy seeing Hurd running power from the offset I?

I suspect there's more of that to come. Add an effective play action passer... and you'll have a truly deadly addition to the O.

Dormady will be the back up this year. Guarantano will RS. I think Dormady wins the job in 2017 and we just have to hope Guarantano is content with being number two and getting the garbage snaps. Butch takes a mid level type guy in 2017 who will RS and be recruited over the second Lawrence commits and arrives.

I agree. Dormady may not have the wheels that Dobbs has, but he can run well enough. He also throws very well on the run.

Maybe you should join another site buddy if you hate pro-Tennessee points of view.

His response probably had more to do with you shrieking racism anytime anyone says anything remotely critical of our QB then your Heisman belief. It's a sad and ignorant act by you that we all feel is tired and old. Yes I feel comfortable speaking for the entire board on this issue.

There are many reasons Dobbs starts over Dormady. Mainly him being a way better qb. Dormady hasn't shown in game he can pass any better than Dobbs. He looked mediocre against NU and completed a lower percentage than Dobbs did for the year. Even though he faced only back ups.

There is a reason Dormady was the lowest rated qb we have. He isn't Josh rosen or something. Gurantano could be a Deshaun Watson tough. Similar ranking, skill-set and talent.

Self-delusion is not a virtue.
A QB who can't pass passes better than a QB who can pass??

QD will start after Dobb graduates. If he does well in Butch's eyes he will remain the starter until he graduates or leaves for the NFL. Then it will be JG's turn. What can change it all is if Dormady gets hurt or plays poorly. I doubt he will play poorly.

No offence but this evaluation is pure silliness. QD has thrown a total of 22 passes. In that limited time, he has showed a stronger arm than Dobbs. Butch did not let him throw very much. I have read where people have talked highly about QD. I know Dobbs will be the starter this year, but it wouldnt shock me to hear a report coming out of spring saying QD seriously pushed Dobbs for the job.

Unless he learns how to run like Dobbs that won't be happening.

I am going the other way and predict the GMan presses Dobbs for live snaps. And a few times will get them depending on the circumstance.

Book it Dano

2016
Dobbs/Dormady/Guarantano(RS)

2017
Dormady/Guarantano/Hooker(RS)
Dormady gets picked #11 in the draft.

2018
Guarantano/Lawrence/Hooker
Hooker and Lawrence split reps as the #2 as Lawrence isn't interested in a RS.

That pretty much sums it up.

Guarantano will be the successor to Dobbs. His skillset is a better match for the offense.

He's the starter opening game 2017.

Agreed. Unless the offense changes, I think Dormady transfers in '17. He would have killed it in the 90s early 00s. Just a different offense in Knoxville these days

So Dobbs is a "way better QB"....why??... Because he's dynamic with his feet!!! He struggles sometimes with even routine throws! Not knocking him...I love the guy. But I hope you're not basing your opinion of Dormady on spot mop up duty with 2nd teamers. Dormady will put up ridiculous passing yards when he gets his shot. And I doubt you'll see our wideouts suggesting they're frustrated like they were this year.

I'm basing my opinion off of games and practice. What are you basing the myth of Dormady's better arm off of? If he can't look better than Dobbs against back ups or in practice why would he be a way better passer magically when he starts a real game?

You cannot reasonably make this comparison. If Dobbs had been injured giving Dormady the chance to take the starter's practice reps and settle in with an O designed around his skill set then he would have performed better.

Dobbs does start for a lot of reasons not the least of which is he is the current leader of the O. But he doesn't have the pure arm talent of QD or JG.

What do you mean by "lowest rated"? If you mean recruit rankings then you are mistaken.

Based on what? Dormady hasn't thrown better from what we saw.

He was also the lowest ranked qb on campus.

247 composite rankings
Dobbs 165 overall 4 star
S Jones 254 overall 4 star
J Jennings 167 overall 4 star
Dormady 262 overall 4 star
Gurantano 71 overall #1 DT Qb.

Dormady is the lowest rated qb we have for a reason. He is not some 5 star sure fire pro like some act. Gurantano is one of those type players though.

Didn't Butch recruit and sign Dormady because he thought he could run this offense? Would it make sense for our staff to sign guys who can't run their systen? That doesn't make any sense at all.

So its silly for me to say Dobbs looks better based on what we see, but you can claim Dormady is better based on what? We also heard Dobbs was much improved in camp and practice and was better than Dormady in the spring and fall. No one has ever posted anything from a practice observer saying Dormady consistently passes better than Dobbs. Only messageboard posters and radio callers have pushed it. Now people quote speculation as fact.

What we have seen is Dobbs throw deep balls against SEC starters better than Dormady's couple of nice passes versus backups. Dormady also has thrown several horrible balls in his limited time. He has a lower completion percentage. What are you basing your speculations on?

It's a nice problem to have. I do think that Dormady's talents are sold short on VN. He will make somebody a good college quarterback.

I agree. As far as who our starter will be, may the best man win.

I'd kinda hate to start a freshman qb, but if proves to be the better play, so be it,

It simply won't happen. Given what we've seen from Butch's years here thus far he avoids starting freshman QB's at all costs.

Not really. JG has said he expects to RS this year. Barring injuries, 2016 will be the Dobbs/Dormady show again.

Good news on the redshirt! I'm glad he's already accepted that. At a school of our level I like to see new QB's learn the system and focus on strength and conditioning for the entire first year.

QD was also injured I believe for a good bit of time which prevented him from getting rated any higher. Atleast according to some analysts and people on here. Just tossing in some info people may not remember, not saying he would've for sure been rated higher just that he had less playing time due to a shoulder injury as I recall.
