I posted this in the "How concerned are you about Dooley's record" thread, but wanted to put it out here for those not viewing that.
The record there seems to be the most bothersome thing for most. Would it be different if he came from a 17-20 Michigan team? Because they have name recognition, but have been pitiful recently.
But I find it to be misleading because of how unforgiving it was. This is my personal breakdown of the win/loss situation and perhaps his whole tenure there as opposed to him being at Alabama with Saban where no one would have had a problem with.
How concerned am I with the hiring of Dooley?
About 15% sums it up.
He knew he was going to a lousy situation, but he wanted to get head coaching experience and was able to do that at a job without any stress or expectation.
In year 2 he took them to their first bowl game in over 30 years.
Last year they were 4-8, but we don't know his roster situation that well. From the casual observers point of view, it's just lousy. But I don't see much difference in 4-8 and 5-6.
However, again just coming from an obsessive fan who follows everything Vols much like most of the rest on here, I see bright spots to focus on:
1. His QB threw 17 tds to only 5 ints. That has to say something. If he wasn't turning it over then why were they losing games? That comes later.
2. He had a 1,000 rusher and the team ran it for over 2,000 yards and over 4.0 ypc Against their schedule, I'd say that's successful.
3. They averaged 29.2 points per game
Last, but not least...
4. 7 of their 8 losses were against bowl teams. They ARE La Tech fellas. What do you expect? The WAC is a tough conference as it is, but you aren't doing yourself any favors by scheduling Auburn, Navy, and LSU in non-conference. That's 3 automatic losses for them in pretty much any year. Two of those three are losses for us in any given year lately.....right?
La Tech's schedule was brutal. They have minimal talent and probably had a tougher schedule than a few Big 10 and ACC teams.
I just don't see how a 4-8 record in his 3rd season being that big of a deal.
Especially after going 8-5 and beating Miss St, Fresno St. and Northern Illinois the year before.
I don't expect immediate results because our schedule the next two seasons are unbelievably brutal. However, what we will do is continue to build around what is obviously a very young team and just as the schedule eases up and they get experience playing tough games, they'll be ready to explode in 2012 and 2013.
Believe it.
