Because nobody would take the job!
Your coach said it would be "nearly impossible " to win at ut for the 1st 2yrs and the fans wouldn't put up with it. He was offered the same buy out and said no thanks.

this is true. would not have gotten him without it. we likely would have ended up with a coach from Stoney Brook or some school like that without that kind of buyout

And we would still be 5-7. What have we gained with DD?

But....but.....but....we could have had Peterson, Saban....Bill Bellichick--if we had only offered $5-6 million!!

Or, according to Clay Travis, just load it in a dump truck and back it up to their front yard and "make them" take it.

If you remember at the time the VolNation was in meltdown mode that their coach (CLK) was allowed to leave after one year and only pay a pittance ($800,000 IIRC). Thus one of MH's primary goals was to raise the penalty payment significantly to prevent deja vu all over again. Well guess what guys, if you want something then you're going to have to pony up something to get it. The penalty payment went up and therefore so did the buyout. After two coaches in two years nobody was worried about "protecting" the university so that they could fire CDD after two years and go through it all over again.

Gripe all you want, but if you were negotiating CDD's initial contract I'd venture to say you would have done the same thing.

So true....What kills me is all the head hunters on this site seem to have overlooked the buyout which was public knowledge from day one.....This was going to happen with any coach we hired at UT....People seem to forget that MH did raise money for this University. More so than any other AD previous....As a result, New facilities and upgrades built and accomplished....the hiring of BP made him look like a genuis....and people thought he had pull the same coup with Kiffin because everybody knew it was time to get rid of Phil....we did and the rest is history......there is enough blame to which coach or who put us in this predicament that we stand in today.....Time will tell.....Martin will be a good hire and Dooley will too but fans want instant gratification and that is a tough bill to fill......

Or we could have hired someone of Dooley's quality for $1.5 million a year with a $500K buyout and saved millions.

Do you think it would be bad PR if UT would have fired CDD after this season? If he doesn't produce a winning record next season I think he will be fired even with a 5m buyout. We need a good coach and that will take time and money. Kiffin left us in a bad spot and in retrospect naming Kippy Brown as an interim coach would have been wise, even if he would of had to scrammble to put a temporary staff together. Could Cutcliffe produced at UT? He only had one losing season at Ole Miss if memory serves correctly. Not that he has won at Duke but that's not easy to do there.

Ernie Grunfeld found and recommended Pearl, not Hamilton.

I guess we will see in the future as rebuilding continues. its a long rebuilding process.. check back in Majors time when it was an easier job to do. 5th year before Johnny could get to 8 wins
