Dooley's contract will keep him here...

$5 million is less than they will lose if the stadium only has 65 or 70 thousand fans per home game next year.
The buyout only drops to 4 million next year also. So essentially if you don't believe Dooley can get it done, you're flushing a season down the toilet for 1 million dollars. And yeah we'll lose more than that by a good bit if this team continues to suck.

Why the heck would you guys have put that in the contract for a coach who was 17-20 in his career?????

And why the heck would you have the date AFTER NSD???

Because Dooley I think realized that this was an impossible situation and barring a miracle he would be on the hot seat by year 2 (which he is), but the buyout basically forces us to give him time.
Hamilton agreed to it because his last hire had such a low buyout that it made Hammy look bad when he left, and Hammy was paranoid that if DD won that UGA would come calling.

Boy, this board is full of ignorant dumbasses

Got some news for you yahoos: Dooley's contract had to be approved by a number of other people besides Mike Hamilton. He didn't do it on his own. He facilitated it for the University. It's just like a bunch of rednecks, though, to be laying blame on someone without having the first dam clue.

Got some other news for you too: Most coaches have similar buyouts at EVERY major BCS school.

This board is full of "what have you done for me lately" knee-jerk reactionaries. Sometimes I am ashamed of our fanbase. This is certainly one of those times

Really? You wanna post this garbage and then call others dumbasses? Question for you there hero. What was Mike Hamilton's title?
Of course it had to be approved but he WAS THE NEGOTIATOR!

Just in case you guys have forgotten, he was the only idiot that would take this job at that time. Yes, even Air Force's coach wouldn't come here. AIR FORCE!! Most rational people realized that this was a huge mess that would take time to rebuild, so they gave him time.

To be clear, no one else would come here for the $ we were willing to pay ... not just no one else would come here.

Actually Dooley's contract isn't that bad if it were for a proven coach. The Kiffin contract was epically bad. Other AD probably laugh their @ss off at that contract. Jerry Bus reached into his pocket and pulled out some change for Kiffin to walk.

It's not garbage. It's 100% true and I forgot more that YOU will ever know about what an athletics director does at a University.

What ever. Like I said MH was the AD and chief negotiator for the university and he did a terrible job at just about everything he touched.

Mike Hamilton single-handedly destroyed the men's athletic program at Tennessee. Football, Baseball, Track all deteriorated under his watch. Thank heavens Joan Cronan was in charge of the women's program otherwise that would probably suck by now too.

Don't forget Baseball

If you remember at the time the VolNation was in meltdown mode that their coach (CLK) was allowed to leave after one year and only pay a pittance ($800,000 IIRC). Thus one of MH's primary goals was to raise the penalty payment significantly to prevent deja vu all over again. Well guess what guys, if you want something then you're going to have to pony up something to get it. The penalty payment went up and therefore so did the buyout. After two coaches in two years nobody was worried about "protecting" the university so that they could fire CDD after two years and go through it all over again.

Gripe all you want, but if you were negotiating CDD's initial contract I'd venture to say you would have done the same thing.

I am NOT saying Mike Hamilton did a great job. He didn't do as bad as ill-informed people like you say though.

Everything he touched??? LOL at your ignorance..The basketball program got completely revived while he was here. Was it all his doing? Absolutely not, but it just shows you know very little as to how you speak

"Under terms of his contract signed March 3, 2010, Tennessee would owe Dooley $5 million if he were fired prior to Feb. 16, 2013. The figure drops to $4 million in 2014-15 and to $2.5 million after Feb. 15, 2015. Those reckless, extravagant figures were approved by then-athletics director Mike Hamilton, president Joe DiPietro and the university trustees."

These numbers are just too large to dismiss Dooley any time soon. The lawyer prevailed over Mike Hamilton...

Bob Gilbert: Dooley, Vols hit rock bottom GoVolsXtra

*Merge if necessary...

hey, we had to lock him down. i have it on good authority that ohio state, notre dame, and socal were sniffing around.
