Dooley's buyout

I'm think Chaney needs to go not CDD but ...

This contract just shows how pathetic Hammy was at contract negotiations.

Dooley came from LA Tech and he get's this kinda agreement.

Needed to be a million 2.5 by 2013, 1 million 2014, 500k 2015.

some of you need to wake up and smell what you're shoveling.

no coach was coming to tennessee without a contract like this. some of you want him gone because in two years he can't turn chicken **** into chicken salad.

i feel i am very qualified to comment here because i pegged just how good both florida and tennessee were before the start of the season and most definitely after the florida-tennessee game. both those teams have been hammered by injuries and both those schools have fans who have the nerve to act surprised about their win-loss records

In 2010, UTK sold out 3 games. They hired IMG to help them market tickets this year. I've heard on air commercials for single game tickets almost weekly in the Nashville radio market this year. Not sure what the sellout tally will be for 2011. 10,000 unsold tickets per game is about $3.5million per year at the gate assuming 3 home OOC games per season. This does not take into account unrented parking spaces, concessions, a drop in sales of licensed merch at the campus bookstore, etc. Easily over $4million in one year. And then you have to factor in the effect on the Knox economy, which gets back to the AD via the trustees who are political appointees. If you want to keep Dooley indefinitely regardless of the record then you'd better be making the appropriate contribution to VASF and buying season tickets.

Here's where it gets tricky. What happens when donors and season ticket holders have had enough and vote with their wallets and their feet? A half-empty Neyland will be noticed. No coach is bigger than the fanbase.

It shows me that both the University and Dooley wanted to hitch themselves to each other for at least the next 4 years (through 2014). Both knew things would be tough, and wanted to make sure neither made rash decisions until stability was brought back into the program. It may end up that Dooley isn't UT's long term coach, but at least he will be given the chance to prove himself as a head coach beyond the tough first couple of years.

They don't have any other expenses in the athletic department to cover with this deficit besides the head football coach buyout....

You may be right, but I have a slightly different take: I think Hamilton was a desperate, panicked little wus, and Dooley had him over a barrel and pressed his advantage to get a killer deal. If Dooley would show the same sharklike qualities on game day, there would be a lot of happy fans in Knoxville who'd be loving that contract.

Actually I read that the buyout dates are in February. He gets $5 million if fired before Feb '13. IIRC, Fulmer's buyout is finished in the fall of '13.

IMO, finances... not to mention common sense... point to DD being the UT HC until at least Feb '14. I think he would almost have to have a losing record next fall not to get the next year.

Hard to show "shark like qualities" when your team is a dogfish. When are you guys going to stop? If he had inherited a team with a solid Fr or Soph class then maybe you would have a complaint.

Please think about the classes that are Jr's and Sr's right now. One had the worst ranking UT has had from Rivals since they started ranking classes. The other was a highly rated... complete bust.

No fans are bigger than the school if you want to use that logic. If they do that it only hurts the program and the kids. Just goes to show what kind of fans they really are, if they seriously would stop following the team after 1.5 years of Dooley. It is pretty pathetic really. I could see things turning south after 3 years and after the 4th year severing ties, but 1.5 years is down right moronic.

We guys-- whoever "we" are-- will stop when you people do... or whenever our team decides to play four quarters of football without quitting or dominating the media's blooper reels.

sharklike.

I would hardly call recognizing an employer must make a quick decision for a high profile job "sharklike."

Hamilton has made a lot of decisions that the university will continue to pay for. That's a result of him having revolving bosses. But this contract was the first he got right.

You might have a different perspective if your seats cost $3K or $6K each. As to what kind of fan they really are-- many are alumni, who want the best for their university.

So walking out on your school is best for the University huh? Seems logical I guess.

I work with contracts every day and have a very different opinion-- not personal to Dooley-- so we'll agree to disagree. :hi:

I said this in another thread, but it's not about the wins and the losses. The problem is how bad the team looks losing. They don't fight -- not to mention that there seems to be no improvement in, well, anything week-to-week (I thought our running game had taken huge strides after what we did against LSU, but it's clear that was an anomaly of some kind).
