Dooley speaks with Fulmer (CBS College Sports)

What Fulmer did for Tennessee can never be taken away, even though in his later years things started to go south, he is still a valuable person to have as friend of the program. CDD know this and you can tell when he speaks about CPF and UT traditions that he truly gets it and understands what a honor it is to be the head coach at a school like UT.

I am glad CDD is here now and I look forward to great things ahead for UT Football.

Kiffin was doing just fine without input from The Fired Coach.

It will take Phil a long time to get over the hurt of having to resign. Not the chance to retire, and go out on his own terms. You know he wanted to pass General Neyland's total win record at UT, and he was close. He was, is and will always be a Tennessee guy. I knew it was time for a change, but it was tough watching him make his resignation speech. Johnny Majors had to go through the same thing with Phil on the other side of the situation. That was tpugh, too.

Now, the real test of CDD's recruiting and coaching expertise will be getting Phil AND Johnny over for dinner together.

It sounded to me Fulmer was trying to let everybody know how hard it is to recruit here and what a great recruiter he must have been patting himself on the back, eventhough Dooley has all ready stated several times that this place with the all it offers is a easy sale. ..JMO...not Fulmer hater...

I could not disagree with you more...I understand you are nOt a Fulmer hater....but Coach Fulmer is nothing but class.....AWESOME interview with Coach Dooley!!!

People can make things sound like they want, doesn't mean they are sincere. I'm sure Fulmer would love to micromanage Dooley, but thankfully I believe Dooley is smart enough to have a friendly relationship with him but keep him out of the complex.
yeah Phil would have been a great choice for OL coach though....

There are some good questions raised here about CDD. X knew what he wanted to do, be the best. Fewest penalties, most points, D schemes to keep the team in games and he wasn't coy about saying it. CDD wants to grow young men. Will his southern manners have him keeping games close to prove his gentility? I think these are legitimate questions.

That said I do think that he did not Mr. Fulmer off the hook in insisting that the University was bigger than any individual. Pulling Rogers might have been a hint of a killer instinct. There is a lot more that could be said. It should be an interesting year.

watching videos of Dooley while coaching at La Tech he gets very fired up and emotional during games...I don't see him being very much of a gentleman on the sidelines

Thanks for the link

Wish Fulmer had looked up in the first question, but looked like he was reading..

After a year of having absolutely no class at the coaching position it is good to get a decent feeling when I see the Tenn. HC again. Dooley was a good hire just like Fulmer was a good hire inhis time. PF gave us many years of excitement and pride and for that I will always be grateful.

You can say what you want to say about Fulmer, but he loves Tennessee. I have nothing but respect for the guy . I have a lot of respect for Coach Dooley too. I was glad to hear we have a lot to sell just by being Tennessee. I think he proved that too.

Totally agree.

"...We will work diligently..." - DD

At that quote, I couldn't help but think about Fulmer probably finishing the sentence in his head as "Will work like heck".

I challenge everybody go back to 2000 and start looking at recruiting classes and you will see why we have had problems many of the 2 and 3* were far more productive than the 5*s.PF was a great OL coach and should have stuck to it look at the Gators Meyer coaches special teams and they are great.Poor Randy Sanders took the hit for Fulmer not much different than what he did to Johnny Majors.Fulmer may be a Tenn graduate you can't take that away but if he had busted is hump he would still have a job and we probably would be in a different position now.But for you youngsters life isn't fair doughboy got 6 mil for deserting us.Then came the Lane who debacle and now we seem to have a man with the drive to put us back at the top and hopefully that is what we alll want.Go Vols
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Hey, sgm. We've been reading your trashing of Coach Phil Fulmer pretty much all day on numerous threads. My good man, the easiest thing to do in life is criticize, personally attack, and name-call someone. It requires ZERO talent. ZERO. NADA. Is that who you really are? I would hope not. Phil is not without his flaws, but he and Vickie dedicated most of their adult working lives to our beloved University of Tennessee. What's with all the vitriol, dude? Coach Fulmer is gone. Please try to show a little class and civility, for Christ's sake.

Guys with class are also just easier to listen to. You don't have to doubt everything they say.

DD " you were always a great fan of mine" to Phil Fulmer.

I know he meant it the other way around, but I still find that part funny, ahha.

Who F-ing cares what Fulmer thinks about CDD

Why do UT fans seem to have a need to live in the past?

I'm a NY Giants football fan. Every time the Giants hire a new coach or draft new players, you don't see the media run out to Bill Parcells or Ray Perkins and ask them what they think about the hire. Nobody asks the new coach if he's going to go talk to those guys. That's unheard of. Even in college football - Did everyone ask Gene Stallings or Mike DuBose what they thought about the Nick Saban Hire or ask Saban if he was going to reach out to either of them? How bout at UCLA, USC, or any other big time program? NO

See, once a coach retires, for the most part, they go away. Maybe if they have long time connections to the University, like Fulmer, they school will trot them out and pay them an outrageous fee that nobody deserves for showing up and signing autographs and helping to promote the "glory days" of the school and raise money. Other than that, nobody really cares much....except UT fans. You want to see Fulmer involved in some way, maybe make him the AD, an look to him like his opinion matters. For proof that his opinion no longer matters in college football, look and see how many programs of the dozens that were looking, brought him in to interview for a head coaching job...none. He contacted a couple and they gave him the ole, "we'll get back to you"... if we run out of all other options. Johnny Majors' opinion matters even less. Why not trot out Bill Battle or Doug Dickey and see if CDD had a sit down with them.

Keep UT traditions, the memories, the lore, the history of a great and storied program...keep that, pass that on as fans and as a university. But for pete's sake, quit worrying about the opinion of coaches who are relevant only in our memories.

Who on here would have thought Fulmer could pull off the TV job? I think he's been pretty darn good. I thought the DT question was actually good TV journalism.

The guys making comments about the eye contact is a little weak and petty, showing some colors. Where is the monitor in the studio?

And, IMHO, Fulmer would have had a better record than Kiffin last year.

We signed 2 players from Tennessee this year. Compare that to places like USC, Texas, and Florida who recruit nationally but get the majority of their recruits from in state. We will always be at a disadvantage because we have to convince the majority of our recruits to spurn their state school.

Calhoun is within 5 hours of Knoxville (Da'Ricks school), but I guarantee you more kids grow up there wanting to play for the dawgs than the Vols.

Recruiting players from out of state is a disadvantage, but I don't think it's the biggest factor in getting kids to come to a school. Facilities, fan base, and distance from talent hot beds also play into the equation and UT holds up pretty well there. It's annoying to listen to a coach whine about how hard it is to recruit to their school and how they have to recruit 'nationally' when they're at a school that has been traditionally strong. It comes across as blatently self-promoting.

UT just finished in the top 10 recruiting in back to back years despite three head coaches being involved and compiling a combined 12-13 record over that period. Maybe those coaches are genius recruiters or maybe UT isn't as tough a place to recruit at as we've been led to believe.

Gee, I hate to hear of Dooley talking with Fulmer. Think the former gangster kingpin will try to lurk around and wrench control back in some way? I shudder at the thought of that.
