Dooley > Kiffin

Couple of things on Hostessgate. For one, it's not even clear as to whether Kiffin knew about it. Secondly, the NCAA hasn't even done anything yet about it, and it's been 5-6 months since it happened.

True, but they came to him. Not the other way around.

And you see where that's gotten us. Fan apathy is starting to set in, and Dooley hasn't even been the coach for 3 months.

Our culture sucked. We didn't win a damn thing for ten years, and Kiffin had to shake things up a little bit.

Because he stopped when the NCAA started getting curious.

This is true, but it was pretty much a last resort though. If they didn't have the ongoing investigation, I'm sure one of those coaches would have taken it before it came to Kiffin.

You are correct, we do have some antsy fans ready for something to happen. But that's just the way it's going to be.

Our culture did not suck, our performance did. I don't know of any coach that could get away with trying to turn his current team into a carbon copy of his last.

You have some pretty good points, there is no getting around it, we just see these things differently on this.

When was this?

When he was playing USC highlights instead of UT highlights. When the Maxims werent taken on road games and he refused to even be a part of it. The little punk would go in the coaches locker room while they were being read.

From Josh Mcneil

"They'd replaced our highlight video from the past season with Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and Dwayne Jarrett from USC. I was like, 'Man, I know we were 5-7 last year, but this is Tennessee. Right beside our national title trophy? Come on, man.'"

Walking up the stairs, McNeil, a 6-foot-4 280 pound offensive lineman, says that all the televisions in the complex, at least 20, were tuned to still photos of stellar plays featuring USC athletes. In particular, McNeil paused in front of one photo of Reggie Bush diving into the end zone on a sunlit California field.

"I was thinking, 'Damn, Jamal Lewis went here. Travis Henry went here. It ain't like we never had any running backs of our own.'"

Within a day the pictures and video were down, but the message had been sent. A new era had dawned in Knoxville.

A few months later after witnessing what McNeil said he believed were affronts to the Tennessee tradition that upset him, the player confronted Kiffin. "Coach," he said, "I feel like you're intentionally not embracing UT's traditions."

Kiffin smirked. "Well, whatever Tennessee's been doing isn't working anymore, so we're coming up with something new. Get used to it."

on the maxims:

Kiffin didn't like the maxims, didn't want to do them. For decades they'd been the final words uttered by every Tennessee player as he left the locker room and rushed onto the field.

Always the head coach led the chant.

No longer.

Kiffin brought in past players and had them lead the team in the chant instead.

Often he was in the coaches' locker room during the chanting. Later, in a departure that altered 70 years of Tennessee tradition, Kiffin didn't take the maxims with the team on the road.

Not a single coach ever said the maxims either, according to team sources.

For McNeil, this confirmed his worst suspicions. "Coach Kiffin cared about Tennessee traditions less than the worst Vol hater in the state of Alabama," he said. "That man's a snake."

Heaven forbid he show them where he wanted to take this program. As far as the maxims if he didn't want to do it he didn't have to so that doesn't matter to me.

You obviously have no idea what the maxims mean to our tradition....

Yeah 70 years of tradition shat on and contempt shown for the players who loved this university and arent just overpaid mercenaries looking for the next big thing. Im glad he's gone. I was tired of his embarassing antics. We were a laughing stock and it wasnt because of our on the field performance.

We'd have to be really bad to go 3-9. UT Martin, UAB, Memphis, Vandy, Kentucky should all be W's unless we are really, really bad.

This team will surprise a lot of people, I really believe that we will win at least 7 games.
By the way I like Dooley better than Kiffin, they are both very intense, but Dooley is more focused on actual on-field performance (just my opinion, I can not prove it).
For those that like to mention his record at his previous job, well, past performance do not necessarily reflect future performance, but I can understand why you would be worried.

Its funny how much people outside DON'T know. I wish both of the coaches the best but there is a lot of biased opinions on this board.

Saying the maxims had no impact on whether Tennessee won or lost games. If a player let that affect his play that’s pathetic on his part.

So, I guess you would have been fine if the predecessor changed our colors to red and yellow to match a certain school out west?

as long as we win national championships, and have a power T on the side of our helmets. i dont care what our colors are!..... although i do love the orange!!!!!!!!

10-2 is what I see for them, without having seen their schedule. Next year I think could be a year where USC is in the hunt for a national title.
UCLA and O St. Old Man Kiffin want know what hit him. If his D couldn't stop McCluster wait till he has to stop Jaqquiz Rogers and his brother of O. St.

Oregon State doesn't run Wildcat, so he should be good. Besides, it's not like Pete Carroll had no trouble whatsover with the Rodgers bros.

I'm surprised that the traditions like the maxims and highlight reels doesn't bother more people. Why do players say that they come to play for the university and tradition not the coaches if we should don't care about ours. We should just take down the "I will give my all for Tennessee" sign, and replace it with "I will give my all to try and be like USC".
