Its much more difficult to judge a DC than an OC. Most people with a football brain can tell how the OC is doing by the plays that are called and the creativity of the offense in general.
Most people that watch football focus on the offense, no matter who has the ball...If your team is on defense you follow the ball and hope your guys make a stop.
Lattimore had a big day on us yesterday, but my biggest concern from the defense hasn't been the run D...its the lack of pressure of the QB. Its painfully obvious that our front four can't generate pressure on a QB on their own, so I'd like to see more creativity on the blitz schemes and see Wilcox bring 5 or 6. A corner or safety blitz every once in a while would be a nice change up as well.
Overall, the deck is really stacked against him this year, and our secondary is so weak he can't get too creative in the blitz packages, because we don't have anyone that can cover one on one.
His running of a vanilla defense is basically the opposite of what Chaney tries to do. Wilcox knows that he doesn't have the personnel to do what he wants, so he keeps it very simple. Chaney doesn't have the personnel he wants, so he throw the ball way to much, runs end arounds on every possession, and puts the freshmen in complex formation sets that create penalties because our guys can't line up correctly.
Yes, Wilcox gets a pass.
