Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

No disrespect to anyone on this thread, but I have been watching this kid play since he was young, and there is nothing that will keep him from being a RB. Yes he could play a number of positions and dominate, but this is what he's done since he was 5 years old and what he likes to do, so running the ball is what he WILL do.

Flat-footed he is anywhere between 6'2.75 - 6'3-2.5 tall. Yes, he's tall but most tall guys do not have the forward lean or lateral movement that he has. His defense is sick, and I think that he would have greater longevity on that side of the ball, but that is not where he wants to play.

The kid is just an absolute monster. The services can predict, rate him what they want, drop his star status due to his shoulder, etc. At the end of the day, none of that will matter. Volnation and the country will soon see the impact that he (as a freshmen) will bring to the team. He is relentless, and all he knows how to do is win.

a voice of reason in these stupid threads. :good!:

I'm sure these are their NFL stats. Each player was actually or listed taller in college. the NFL makes player tilt their head so that their chin touches their chest when measuring height.

Last played in 1981. The game has changed a lot in over 30 years.

The game has changed, the rules definitely favor the offensive players now so it's easier. Back then LBs and DEs could take heads off. Now a flag is thrown if you barely hit someone.

Are we talking listed height? If so, then i'll put as much stock in 6' 4" as I put into Allen Iverson's 6' 0".

Side note, I could care less if he was listed as a 7' 0" if he carries us to an SEC Championship or National Championship in the next four years.

You are correct in your thinking. Tall RB's are few and far between. Yes, you can name a couple of people that have succeeded despite being tall but an overwhelming majority of people that tall dont make very good rb's. We just have to hope he's basically a one of a kind back. We shall see.

Excellent post, it is a proven fact that the majority of people 6'-4 or over don't make elite running backs.

Of course the majority of people under 6' 4 Don't make elite running backs either.

Eric Dickerson, Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, OJ Anderson, Adrian Peterson, John Riggins, Marcus Allen, George Rodgers, Chuck Muncie, Franco Harris, Stephen Jackson, Eddie George, to name a few off the top of my head... all 6'2" or taller (except for Peterson who's a smallish 6'1") all great running backs.....

I looked up most of these players and Dickerson and George are the only ones i found claiming 6'3.

Facts are facts.....6ft 4in running backs are hard to find. Keep tryin.

you ARE overanalyzing this. Let him get here and show what he can do on the field. I know we are like kids at Christmas waiting to open presents, but let it come. Don't be pulling your hair out now. It will happen. be patient.

Brandon Jacobs comes to mind for current players. Jalen will be a big bruising RB. If he gets in the second level you will see DB's shy away from coming up to hit him. This is the kinda back we need. I have a feeling you will see a smaller speed back as well next year. Maybe Pig?
Brandon at 6-4 270 is a bigem

There's going to be a lot of people eating their words when he gets here and starts racking up yds. The kid is a stud at RB and that's where I think he will most definitely play. GO VOLS!

Kid's a baller and that's a fact jack..let him play a few games, see the results, then we can revisit this subject maybe.

Yes and Pig Howard (5'8") is too short to play WR. Simple fact is we have a BIG bruising RB who is also pretty freaking fast. That combo is very rare.

Is this a new thread... Or just the same one that continues to get recycled? Hes a bad ass in high school and camps, but somehow he won't be at the college level? Stfu!

There are plenty of examples of great backs over six feet. But 6-4 is really tall for a running back and, yes, size only hurts if it costs you something else, but the reason RBs arent' that tall is because height generally does come at the expense of agility. Which would be my biggest concern with Hurd is that he lacks the ability to change direction on a dime that you need in the SEC.

Eric Dickerson was 6'3" and not as fast as Hurd.Stupid argument!!!Hurd can't change direction???? Oh my who have you been watching.

To OP:

So if he's not as good as Eric Dickerson or Eddie George you think he's a failure?

Ummm, you might want to reconsider the speed part. Dickerson won the state 100y (yes yard, it's been awhile back) title in Texas while in HS. Credited with 10.3 100m and 20.9 200m. So no...whatever Hurd is he isn't as fast as Dickerson.

Having said the above I think it's nuts to speculate about what his height will/won't mean as a RB. He'll come onto campus and get handed the ball. If he produces at RB then there you have it...if he doesn't then he'll likely get a look elsewhere.

ESPN has him listed at 6-4. I'm trying to think of an elite tailback who was that tall and I'm drawing a blank. I'm not saying that an elite 6-4 tailback is outside the realm of possibility, but I definitely think there's a reason the average height of running backs in the NFL is 5-9; namely, a lower center of gravity allows for quicker changes in direction, which is something running backs have to do.

The tallest elite running back I can come up with is Eric Dickerson, who is 6-3. So it isn't impossible, but he's definitely the exception. And he was also just a uniquely talented player.

Am I overthinking this? Is Hurd definitely going to be a stud?

He is not too tall. He is not too heavy. He is a running back. He is a good safety. He will play running back for Tennessee. He will start by the middle of 2014. He is an exception.
