Does Heupel Check the Boxes?

Just stating facts.
If you think his recruiting will be even decent at UT you are mistaken.
Put the lipstick on the pig all you want, nothing he has done suggests he will be able to get top recruits.

Why will his recruiting be bad?

If any coach cannot recruit top talent Tennessee football will stay where it has been.
I couldn't agree more, but the fact is that Tennessee has had tons of SEC/NFL talent coming to the program and vanishing over the past twenty years. It's almost like it's been a black hole.

I’ll be excited to see who ends up playing quarterback, most important position on the field. At least now, all our quarterbacks will get coaching, prepared to play, and a fair shot through competition. Go Heupel, and GO VOLS!!!

Here’s a look at some of the best players Heupel had the opportunity to coach at QB:
UT coach Josh Heupel's history of great quarterback play | 11alive.com

An All-American quarterback during his playing days at Oklahoma, new Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has taught a lot of successful signal-callers during his career.
From 2006-2017, Heupel coached quarterbacks either as a primary job or in conjunction with a role as an offensive coordinator.

I think it's an exciting hire!
The spread/air raid offense should be welcomed by our quarterbacks! Salter and Maurer should really be excited! (Maybe "another Drew Lock" is in our future!)
But, keep Steele as defensive coordinator and we should hopefully be much improved soon on both sides of the ball; unless that is, too many of our players keep on transferring.
P.S. I wish this site had more people on it with positive outlooks. Go Vols!

When I look at what I wanted in a head coach, Heupel checks off quite a few boxes for me.
Head coach experience (not Power 5 but...)
Offensive minded
Knows how to use offensive weapon
Knows how to coach a QB
Has won more than 10 games in a season

Not checked
Recruiting - I am not sure he is a "closer" and can recruit SEC caliber talent
No SEC experience ( I know he was OC at OK but that is not the SEC)

Wait to See
Can he hire a "Good/Great" staff for the SEC - The DC he had UCF is not going to cut it in the SEC
Does he understand he is already on the "Hot Seat" with Volnation?

What does he have and not have that you wanted?
He has SEC experience as a top OC for Mizzou

Took Missouri's offense from 48th to 14th when he got there in 2017...Had a top 5 offense in the nation each year he was at UCF.

This hire leverages our team's strengths, which are the skilled positions on offense. That's priority #1. I'd of preferred Kiffin or Freeze but this is a good hire.
He got there in 16. Their offense was 104th. He improved it massively.

Really depends on the staff he puts together for me. I was angry this morning but if he can put together a staff with SEC experience that can recruit and develop players, I will feel a lot better. If he just brings his UCF staff, then that would be extremely disappointing.

If you can score points you can beat the bad-average teams. Look at OM this year.

I think they could win 3-4 SEC games next year if the team comes back. Add 3-4 non-con games and it’s a good season.
I hope , I’m not cheering against the guy

Mostly all 3* players, he should get a few 4* here

Don't forget, we still have some recruiting advantages no one at UCF could dream of: the size and quality of our workout and practice facilities, (maybe someday again) +90,000 fans in the stands, and games shown on SEC and CBS network each season. The quality of his recruiting will improve on those advantages alone.

Look next to see how soon and well be builds relationships with TN high school coaches, while maintaining his Florida connections.

does that include the Heisman QB he coached, the NC he played for, or NFL players he developed?
Who has he recruited that was a Heisman winner? NONE
Who has he recruited that ever played in a NC game? NONE
How many players that he recruited are in the NFL? Very few to NONE, I did not look it up.
