I honestly think so right now. Let's assume the SEC gets 6 teams in. According to many experts the SEC and ACC are the best conferences right now.

Right now Florida and Kentucky are locks for the tourney. Vandy looks to be in as does Bama if they avoid a total meltdown.

So that leaves Tenn, UGA and basically Arkansas or maybe Miss. competing for the last two spots. Our RPI and big OOC wins are better than all of these teams. Plus, I think the committee will take into account the loss of Lofton for four games in the middle of conf. play. Especially if we play well down the stretch with him back.

So even if a couple of these teams go 8-8 in conf. play I think we can trump them even with a 7-9 conf. record and at least a 1-1 showing in the tourney making our overall record 20-14.

I think one of our biggest games is at UGA b/c this is the game that will either put us at 7 wins or hopefully 8 wins in conf. play. Plus, I think they are our biggest challenge for possibly the final SEC spot and beating them twice would look good in the committee's eyes.

A victory over either Ky. or Fla. at home, plus 18 totalwins gets them in IMO.

PS, the losses to Ole Miss and Vandy don't look so bad now the way those teams are playing both might get in tne Big Dance with a win or to in the SEC playoffs.

yeah definately. IF we got like 6-10 and win some tourney games, we're in too I think. Or if we go 3-13 in conference we could still get in by winning the SEC tournament. :)

Our season hinges on getting a servicable Chris Lofton back, not a hobbled player that can only play a few minutes per game. Like I said before these ankle sprains can take weeks to heal.

Well, they're certainly not rushing Lofton back. I'd say it was very hard for Bruce to play UF without Chris. If not, it was hard on me. Hopefull when he comes back, he'll be in good enough shape and continue to heal while he plays.

I do think you are right and that 7-9 you are in because of the lack of Lofton. Especially so if you can get a 20th win in the SEC tournament first round.

This is off topic, but what year is Green? Seems to me like he's been at UF forever.

Not sure we get in at 6-10. If we can't get three wins out of five home games and a split of UGA/SC then we deserve the NIT.

we will have to make a serious run in the tourney to ge to the ncaas at 6-10

I think if you are 6-10, you would have to at least make it to the finals and probably also get some help, i.e. no upsets in the auto-birth mid-major conference games.

Does a close loss to a top team (Ohio State) count? I don't know how the selection committee decides. I know it is more subjective than the BCS in football.

Vols should have won that game. :banghead2:

Indeed, those heartbreakers to Ohio State and Vandy are looming much larger now.

I think there's a very good possibility that we need at least one win in the SEC tournament to get in. Recent history shows that to be a tougher task than it should be. Of course, I would still like to believe that, by that time, Lofton will be at or near 100%, and UT could get hot and just win the whole thing.

True. Lawgator may use one of his laughing smiley's, but I think with a healthy team, a upset of Florida by us or any other team, and we could win the SEC tourney.

Last weeks ESPN Bracketology had us as an 11 seed before losing to Florida.. I think we're going to wind up in a situation where we have to win the SEC tourney to get in. Anyone heard on when Lofton may be back? We can't afford to lose many more...

Lofton returns tomorrow night...

Also worth noting the NCAA selection committee will take into account each of the losses that were Lofton-less...

It's all about February for the Vols. There is work to be done, but this team has not shown any quit...even in the face of insurmountable deficits on Saturday.

Chances to make the dance??? 85%... maybe a little hopeful, but that's my way...

and they also look at the entire resume and schedule. and our is favorable. now having said that, we need to win some games, but it's kind of like last year. most of us thought we'd get in at like 4 or 5 seed......the committee looked at it and gave us a 2 seed based on what we had done the entire season. so barring a complete meltdown, get Lofton back and get a few wins and at least one in the SEC tourney i think we still get in. would be nice to p/u the games against KY and Vandy. With lofton i think we are capable of winning any game we play, save FL. That doesn't mean i think we will win all of them, but we are capable of it. we can still finish 8-8 in the conf....longshot i know....6-10 or worse, we'll need to make a deep run in the SEC tourney.

During the FSU/Duke game yesterday, one of the broadcasters said that the selection committee values a non-conference road loss moreso than a victory against a team outside of the top 150 in the RPI.

yep......and 5 of our losses are to: UNC, OSU, FL, Vandy and Butler (the no. 1, 3, 4, 13 and 22 ranked teams in the nation).......all away from Knoxville.

and we've beaten Ok. St, Memphis, and TX, the no. 11, 12 and 22 ranked teams in the nation.

the schedule is pretty darn good.
