Do we have a realistic chance to beat Georgia?

Absolutely. I just rewatched our game from last year. We went toe to toe with them, at Georgia, during the first half going into the the 3rd quarter all tied up. In the second half, our offense clammed up and didn't score. Our defense limited Georgia to one touchdown late in the 3rd and one late in the fourth. Nico was ineffective in the 2nd half. He is gone, thank you. I know Kirby is a defensive minded coach and made adjustments at the half. However, this year we are on Rocky Top and I think CJH wants this more than anything and will anticipate Kirby's adjustments this time.

We let Beck who had thrown 12 picks in 6 games have a field day throwing for 347 yards. I’m actually more worried about the defense. Why we insist on majority zone on 3rd and long baffles me. I hope that changes.

For the past couple of years, when I watched Georgia early in the season, I thought they looked beatable. We have them at home, early in the season. If our twelth man shows up and hangs on, we could be them. And then I win the lottery.

Yeah. GA seems kind of limited offensively, at least the QB does.
I have the same thought as a Dawg fan, but I was surprised to see that advanced stats metrics loved our week 1 performance—even adjusting for opponent, pace, and garbage time. We’ll see. I don’t trust Stockton to stand in and sling it, and I thought he lacked the ability to see the whole field like Beck. The passing concepts looked simple and a little sloppy, too.

Maybe it’s first game cupcake eating, and I know y’all are banged up in the secondary. But I will have to be convinced by our passing game.

I will say this, though: Beck got very sloppy with the ball last year, and Stockton was, too, against Texas. There was none of the “sling it and hope” we saw last year.

Good luck this week, fellas. We look forward to our regularly scheduled fist fight the week after.

I would love to say yes but I don’t think so. I mean be honest, what have anyone seen that makes them think we can beat UGA? Are our WRs good enough to get separation from their DBs? Maybe our run game can carry is but you aren’t just lining up, running the ball and beating UGA. Yes JA is an upgrade over Nico but we couldn’t come close to UGA with Hooker.

The fact is UGA has the advantage at every possible position including coaching. Hopefully I am wrong and we beat UGA and I can come back and eat a huge plate of crow and admit how stupid this post is. I just have a feeling we are in for another beat down.

I don't think anyone should be faulted for thinking objectively about why UGA is the better team. All of your points are valid.

I think for some the question of 'realistic chance' is being answered as a 'should we' beat UGA.

College football games are constantly being won every weekend by teams that 'shouldn't' win but took advantage of their chance.

Getting UGA at home helps our chance, too.

We absolutely have a chance. We're at home and Neyland will be as rowdy and loud as it ever has. Heup has the QB he's been looking for since Hooker. We have a stable of quality RBs. O-Line looks ahead of schedule. We have a really good pass rush. Our secondary looks elite. We're tackling well and swarming to the football.

I believe we pull off the upset barring any catastrophic injuries this Sat

Yes, we have a chance. Realistically? That could be best measured by a statistical inference the week of the game. Right now I would give us a 35% - 40% chance. Yes, that's realistic, but not likely. Things might change between now and then

Of course we have a chance. You Voldawgs in here take ANY opportunity to praise the Buttsmehres. I will never understand that.

Is it likely? No. Do we have a 'chance'? Hell yes.

But to roll over and basically ask that trash program to rub your belly is embarrassing IF you're a true Vol fan.

Good grief. Some of y'all in here just puzzle me.

I think a lot of it is the 2022 let down. Alot of Vols fans thought we could beat them in 2022 and then went to Athens and laid an egg.

I have a weird feeling about this game like I did with 2022 Alabama. On paper, Georgia should win. However, Tennessee keeps closing the gap and played Georgia pretty well last year.

One issue is that Georgia won't overlook Tennessee and hasn't. I traveled to Athens last year and talk to tons of UGA fans, we were by far the best team they played at home so they were amped for that game. It was a similar situation in 2022 as well. Georgia played a softer schedule and set around hearing about Tennessee for weeks and were amped up for Hooker and Co to come in.

It isn't like 2024 Ole Miss where we have been overlooked. That being said, I think this team may have a grit about them and a chip on their shoulder. Tennessee has nothing to lose going into this one. All the pressure is on Georgia. There is also something about Aguilar that intrigues me. The guy seems to be one of those fighters who wants to prove himself. I guess we will find out in a couple of weeks. In my opinion, Georgia is the better team but there is just a feeling that I have about this game.

Jimbo's A&M teams aren't really an exception. There are teams of highly recruited guys who don't win all the time. Not every team full of highly rated, highly recruited players will be good but it sure seems like every team who has a serious chance to win a title (and definitely the teams who win titles) are full of highly rated recruits.

The only coach who comes to mind who had consistent, long-term periods of success despite being consistently under-talented relative to the competition is Bill Snyder. It's funny to me when people try to dunk on successful coaches who have really talented teams as though Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, or other highly successful coaches won with guys off the street. It's like they'll only be impressed if they're still able to win with a hand tied behind their back.
Agree on Snyder. He took over a program in 1989 that had won a total of three games the previous four seasons combined, and made them nationally relevant by taking them to 19 bowl games and the cusp of a national title game. Unbelievable turnaround.

I think our ineptitude in the secondary will be the difference, as it seems to be every year against them (among other things). They will pick us apart.

I agree. It's possible we win, not likely.

The big problem hasn't been our receivers getting separation on GA Dbs or our Qb making the throw. It's been both. I think we have the coaches to scheme open receivers, and hopefully the quarterback to get them the ball. Had Imaleaving hit 75% of open td shots we would have won last year. We will win this year.
