I've noticed that we always line up and just think we can push teams around for a short gain but never do. After a long yardage gain we ALWAYS run up to the line and run quickly for NO gain.

This. We actually threw a quick out after a big gainer yesterday and got like 3 yards.

Nothing wrong with offense. Avg. 175 yds. rushing and 330 in the air. Lead D1 in offense. Rushing defense is workable at 142 yds./game against the likes of UGA, Bama, Arkansas (Arkansas has the number two rushing offense in the SEC ). Problem is pass defense. It’s worse than bad. We started out the year with back up cornerbacks and Turrentine, bless his heart, can only be described as serviceable at best. Add in Boo Carter’s head case and you’ve got the makings for a disaster in the defensive backfield. That’s your problem.

Sacks do not just come from interior d-lineman. They come from edge rushers, linebackers, and defensive backs as well. Run stoppage is what we are specifically talking about here and that IS greatly impacted by the defensive line.

The truth of the matter is, we have a "Big 12" caliber D-Line trying to compete in the SEC.

Next year is looking worrisome at this point from a numbers standpoint and with our best guys graduating.

I'm not happy with the way our defense played this season, but I do know we had at least 3 DL out for the first few games , mix that with our two best DB's out (and still havent played) , thats almost half of our projected starters. That along with the apparent poison Boo Carter was with the team, we got what we got. I do think Hobbs being back has beefed up our run defense some. A couple of freshman have gotten better and better. I just dream, like we all do, how good this team would have been with our offense and a defense like last year.

Part of it could be a lack of discipline always trying to get a sack during run plays instead of playing sound defense. See post #26. That is why for the longest time, we get beat outside with the DEs crashing but then we don't get tackles for loss like past years. We don't have those 330lb and 340lb DTs like in recent years.

We do seem to field regularly a Big 12 type defense outside of what OU or Texas generally put on the field.

We have the youngest d in the sec. Plus we have had 3 or 4 projected starters not play all of or most of the year.

Never played the line position but played FB and my understanding that it is more about proper leverage than brute strength. But I do know that strength is needed for all positions.

It’s weird the way that position group went from really good to a struggle in one offseason.

Yeah and thats why I have been so openly critical of this staff's lack of portal activity this past offseason. You cant teach 6'2" 340 lbs. You might can develop guys into that size and maybe there are some on our roster that will, but that takes time. Our staff should have picked up a couple of big interior dudes in the portal for this season while our youth had time to better grow physcally into those positions.

With the amount of talent we lost on D-line, a regression was expected. Those guys may not have all been NFL talent, but Simmons and Thomas were beasts. Then you throw in losing a 1st round draft pick in James Pearce and yeah no amount of coaching is going to make up for that much ability if you don't have the depth built to sustain that type of production.

Rodney Garner can have a lifetime contract as far as I'm concerned.

Thats why I'm highly critical of our staff for not getting ANY d-lineman in the portal this year. Where is our sense of urgency? They dont have to be all world, they just need to fit the profile and plug holes to be stalemates in the middle. You mean to tell me, in the entire pool of available FBS/FCS players in the portal, we couldnt have gotten a couple of serviceable 6'2"/6'3" 330-340lb defensive tackles?

Secondary has been an issue since Heupel got here and the precision, size, skillset, speed and agility seem quite lost of this defensive coaching staff, time to turn it over to somebody else that understands SEC offenses and how to best defend against them.

Martinez was no good here his first go round and he’s still no good this time. We have some that will defend him though.
