Disappointment..

I think CBJ has his comments dissected more than the presidents of the US. It's just a comment. He's not talking to anyone person directly. Let it go. Anybody ever had a child that didn't live up to your expectations? Did you tell them they were a disappointment?

A great coach would put it all on himself and tell the fanbase that it's his fault. Our coach didn't do that. Do the math.

he owned it last year. what more do you want? do you want him to slit his wrist? Drink anti-freeze? Geesh...you guys want him to grovel around campus until you all decide to forgive him.

I don't doubt a select few on here hasn't.

"Can't believe you tore your ACL on that play son, get your azz in the car."

I can hear them now.

Lol wow I just came back to this thread. I love what it has become, only on VN would this become a debate. The butthurt is stunning here too. As the OP, let me clarify a few things.

- I really don't care that Butch didn't call last season a disappointment. Butch is the master of coach speak. I found it humorous the way the articles were laid out. It almost looked like Vickers was correcting him.

- Don't get me wrong, Butch is not a good coach.

- I'm happy for everyone here who feels a solid rebuttal is Butch's demeanor at SEC Media days. That doesn't make him a good coach. Beat Muschamp, with the East, and we'll discuss your demeanor.

Wait, some of you don't think Butch is a great coach? News to me.

Well, the great ones don't use the word disappointing. The line has been established.

I believe it's okay as long as "was" is used before instead of "not".

But Im not really sure, the line is adjustable.

It's substantially less relevant than what happens on Sat. Which is why he's having to answer questions like these type to begin with.

To your last question.

Had he called the 2016 season "disappointing" for what or where UT wasn't able to get, would you phrase that question just the same?

Im not sure had Jones agreed and called it disappointing it makes him any less of a coach. No more than it being a trait of all the great ones.

I don't know what his aversion is to the word "disappointment"... but if he's not disappointed with last year then he probably doesn't have the right attitude to succeed.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt and the fact he made several moves with the staff, I would say that he was. Having said that, he's trying too hard to control the public perception of what happened last year.

To players, if you didn't win enough, that's all that matters to them.

I'm sure Butch wasn't happy with the win loss record. However, he has to think of everything as a whole. We set records on offense, graduated all seniors, and still won 9 games with a severely depleted roster. He's not going to say yeah it was a dissapointement and then everyone runs around saying he threw his players under the bus because he didn't take accountability.

I'm sure there's a few calls he wished he wouldn't have made. That's every coach. He didn't fumble 6 times or commit 12 penalties at a&m, quit the team midway through the season, injure all of his starters, or throw balls 10 yards in the ground at SC.

I think he's an above average coach who just brought in a hell of a coaching lineup. It would be nice to just sit back and wait and see how things go instead of fishing for sh!t to dissect everyday.

I agree Beecher. I was actually trying to figure out what the experts were allowing.

After the SC loss, he said it starts with him and the coaching staff but the loss is on everybody. He stated six or seven deficiencies by the team generally but did not specify anything that he or the staff did wrong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWU_ptk7Xvo

After the Vandy loss, I heard no ownership just some general statements about bad defense and references to injuries after stating that injuries were never an excuse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NROtURaIGXg

If this or any other thing CBJ has said that would have brought critical attn to us were have been done by one of our rivals...everyone would be poking fun like crazy.

And you'd be defending them by criticizing our HC. :dunno:

Nah. I don't want Butch to fail.

I actually want us all to be on the same page about our coach the way Bama fans are about Saban or the way FSU fans are about Jimbo.

Trust me, I dream of a world where Butch makes all the haters (myself included) eat crow and just plain out-coaches the HC's he goes up against. He calls ballsy plays consistently, doesn't let off the gas, and gets praised for his on-the-field ability.

I would love nothing more than to go into games thinking "At least we know we have a better Head Coach than them." Even if we lose, it would be great to not think we lost due to coaching.

I just don't see any of that happening when you're in your 4th year, and your team is capable of losing to Derek Mason's Vanderbilt. I would love to be proven otherwise.

BS. It is obvious from all of your posts that you had rather see Butch fail than for the Vols to win. That's OK, but you should admit it.

You probably should have picked a better example seeing as how Tommy Armstrong didn't participate in that game

Really? Even though Armstrong was out, the press coverage was that those Nebraska running backs were going to eat our lunch. I remember this well because I am a Cornhusker alum as well as Volunteer and sometimes follow their press.

The only thing I see that Butch could call a disappointment would be S&C and our injuries. The biggest off season hire for Butch this year will be Rock as the S&C coach.

So let me get this straight....we didn't win the SEC, nor did we win the East last season as overwhelming favorites, and lost to both SCar and Vandy......and you, as a fan, were not/are not disappointed in how the 2016 season wound up? Is that about it?

Should be interesting.

A) Why in the world would that be ok?

B) Please quote a single one of my posts supporting your argument that I would rather see Butch fail than the Vols win.
