What have been the challenges that this young man has been unable to overcome to become a high level player? I've not heard anything specific over the last few years. Obviously as heralded as he was coming out of high school he was expected to start at some point in his career. Thanks for any info.

Probably lousy coaching and a pathetic weight training program failed him.

Piss poor coaching. Look at how many players failed to live up to potential under Butch. That should tell you everything you need to know.

But all the LBs during the Butch era were coached by the same stiffs, so Bates had equal chance to earn playing time and he just couldn’t get it done. Bottom line is that he’s just not that good, and was probably overrated coming out of high school because of his legacy status.

I guess it was last year I heard Mike Griffith say on one of those podcasts that he has some talent, but his heart just isn't in it. This is not my opinion; I have no idea.

Heard awhile back it was his lack of toughness and general inability to understand the playbook/schemes. Of course, playing under Lyle and Thig, it’s clear his coaching sucked and development was essentially nonexistent.

He was over rated. So was Dontavious Blair, Kongbo, and Khalil McKenzie.

In fairness, we had some damn good linebacker play when they had a line in front :AJ, Kirkland, Bitulu is coming around, thank coaching for colten Jumper being servicable.

Keep in mind he was injured early and never seemed to be the same afterwards. It happens, and I hate it for the kid.

YES...thanks for posting this. Kid had a serious injury and completely changed his abilities..,,Usually this is what happens to a player of this type when they don’t work out....Before we start screaming “overrated” we need to look at the injury list first ...

Plausible argument, but it comes down to different strokes for different folks, imo. Some players are great at self motivation and pushing themselves. Other players only blossom under legitimate coaching. Certainly Bates had equal opportunity as any teammate, but does the fact he needed legitimate coaching really dismiss his physical talents. What comes natural to some does not come natural to others. Hard to argue Bates had bad teachers.

I think you’ve answered your own question - he isn’t talented enough for the SEC.

If that's what you got from my response, I'm not sure you're talented enough for VN.

You said certain players only blossom under good coaching - If Bates needs “blossoming” to crack the rotation then he’s not talented enough.

Sorry to have to dumb it down for you.

I can only guess, but quickness and speed might be it. If that is true, then you got to be a beast and dish out painful hits all game long as a MLB type... just a guess

Lets not judge the kids or their talents on the previous staff. Jones was a decent recruiter. Not so sure he knew where to put them when he got them though. I actually think that injuries killed Bates.

Kirkland has been injured a lot too, but we all know he’s talented because when healthy, he’s been on the field and performed. Bates? Not so much. It’s not personal, but when Jumper gets significantly more PT than a 4* recruit, then the 4*s probably weren’t warranted to begin with imo.
