Did They Steal Nico's $?

Hadn't heard that. Wouldn't wish that on anyone. It's especially tough on the family. If true, I can easily understand the desire to be closer to home especially as treatments are ongoing.

I googled it. There are references to her being a breast cancer survivor and the family starting a foundation last fall.

Perhaps my memory is failing. Would have sworn that was a big story last summer.

Wonder if Nico was old enough to sign an NIL contract when he was recruited by Tennessee, was he 18 at the time he (a) signed scholarship/grant in aid documentation and (b) signed NIL exchange agreements with Spyre Sports or did daddy have to put ink on paper as well.

Not too sure how deep the well is for NIL dollars to pay key players attending the University of Tennessee (compared to Oregon, Texas, A & M or Arkansas) but these agreements are not with the university, we know that the University of Tennessee coaching staffs have conversations with the operators of the collective, but those decisions as to how much and to whom are not contractual obligations of the school or the coaching staff.

His dad's Twitter bio says "helping kids achieve their goals".
Reading this really makes me wonder why they behaved the way they did on this. Seems out of character. Strange.

I hope Nico gets blackballed from the league. He and his family were apparently shopping teams behind coach’s back and the Oregon coach called Huepel to let him know what was happening. It’s hilarious knowing 2.4 million a year wasn’t enough for the kid when he’s making more than NFL rookies… POS in my opinion

It would be hilarious if they ended up with a deal only a fraction of what they had at UT. Even if you sign the kid you don’t know if the family or agent are out there shopping again.

Appears to be a lot of risk with limited gain.

Nico turned 18 in early September of 2022.

Well before anything was signed.

Rumor from RF is that his family blew the money and that he is in major tax trouble.
And now they’re out searching for another payday. Lets assume for a minute the other posts in here are mostly true…parents/family spent the money, hasn’t paid taxes and believe I saw the last payment has been made by Spyre already. They’re in some really deep 💩. Never mind the fact all this information will be shared across all athletic departments and collectives which means they have little leverage after what everyone has witnessed what’s gone on at Tennessee. They may get even less than what Nico was getting paid at UT. In the blink of an eye Nico/family look very toxic to other top programs. What a shame.

I think that’s a real possibility.

That is the reality of the portal era in college athletics. They are ALL free agents several times/year.

Like someone said, we can't hate the NCAA enough.

Another question that comes to mind is: will Spyre continue to be as free and easy with their money.... nah... of course they will. There is no doubt this won't affect anything they do. The next 5* that shows any interest in UT they will open their checkbook without hesitation. morons.

Only if you expect more than a year out of him. What's funny is that he's already counting his chickens (NFL contract), and he hasn't proven anything yet.

Good idea. This would have been a huge help for me, I would have been woefully unprepared if my parents weren't so financially literate. The "Civics" course I had in a rural af high school was gov, econ, and personal finance crammed into one semester. It would have prepared me for nothing if not for my folks and older sisters.
Zep, you know our high school was to worried about shoving algebra, algebra 2, and calculus down our throat to worry about basic life skills stuff.Half our class couldn't count money back to someone but yes let's do algebra because everyone is going to use that in everyday life🙄

Oh, of course. What they (players) do or don’t do wrt to taxes, giving family money, etc. is not Spyre’s concern once they money has been paid. Can’t babysit these guys.

If this is the case I hate it for him. I understand he's an adult but let's not kid ourselves he's an inexperienced one. If his parents are manipulative parasites my heart breaks for him. You don't choose your family.

This is why while I would love to win the lottery, part of me knows it would require me to distance myself from anyone and everyone who knows me until I had myself and those I really wanted to take care of ... well taken care of in the right way.

Edited to add - but in my younger days I would not have thought to do that.
Lived in a modest subdivision one time in NC where there was a 60ish aged couple who had lived up north and won they lottery. They moved south to get away from everyone they knew including family for just this reason.

Which thread is that in the RF. Would be interested to read the comments. Somehow, that just wouldn’t surprise me.
