I think he only donated 1 million, rather than 10. He is very wealthy, and I miss him as our announcer. He is far better than anything else out there right now.
When the donation was first made, the amount was not revealed. The university did say, it was the largest single endowment in school history at that time.No--- I remember being shocked at the donation--pretty positive it was 10 mil. Could be researched, but wth. I have a very good memory when it comes to UT. Donation was made in the names of John & Mrs Ward.
that just means Ward had a better spotter
"Bottom!"
"Spining, driving fighting"
I am old enough that Ward's last few years were when I was in college. We used to turn on the radio and listen to him broadcast the game while watching tv. There was an obvious lag, but it was much more enjoyable than listening to the tv announcers.
From what I have heard Ward drank his way out pissing off people at the top on the way.
Where did you hear this? Ward lived down the street from my grandfather and was good friends with him so I had many run-ins with John Ward and he had been nothing but kind and visited my grandfather frequently when he became sick. I've been in the Ward home before and nothing I've seen or experienced when talking to him or being in his house would ever hint at anything like this. From what I have heard Ward drank his way out pissing off people at the top on the way.
Amazing to me how much Kesling sucks in football but is really really good in basketball. Of course Bertlekamp may have something to do with that. Kesling is ridiculously bad at football.
Classic Kesling call:
"Hardesty..around the end..and he's got some room and finally gets tackled after a gain of 27"
I think that Bertelkamp is definitely the reason that Kesling is easier to listen to in basketball rather than football. I really like Bertelkamp, he is unabashedly a U.T. fan and he gets so excited he can get the listener into the game.
I do think Kesling has gotten worlds better at calling football games. He was so bad when he first started, and he has improved to being no less than mediocre now. The thing that really bugs me about Kesling is when he says "They wind the clock", meaning the game clock has started. I really hate that.
We live in a T.V. culture now (and have for some time). The guys that came up through radio broadcasting are history. It's a shame, and it will never be the same.
The John Ward \ Bill Anderson duo - untouchable. I use to have a bunch of casette tapes of jw calling games, & i think my wife sold em at a yard sale. One of my fav JW calls was when Nylo Sylvan returned a punt to tha house, "He`s to the 45, the 40, he can fly, 35, 30". Thats what i miss. Can you still buy "Give him 6" shirts ? And i know Bob Kesling isnt the greatest, but he beats the hell out of eli gold ! IMO
